Without exaggeration, everyone was waiting for the release of the iPhone 6, both those who hate the iPhone, and those who are fans of the Apple phone, and even those who, by and large, don’t care. Traditionally, miracles were expected from Apple: an enlarged screen with sapphire protection, an uber-camera with a higher number of megapixels, which would bring out the quality mobile photography on new level, finally an updated case design! And as often happens, the higher the expectations, the greater the disappointment.
After the release, which took place on September 9, many were disappointed. I'll be honest, despite my more than loyal attitude towards the brand, I was also a little upset. Firstly, because the design actually turned out to be exactly the same as we saw it in leaks. And to be honest with them with the protruding camera and vulgar stripes covering the antennas, what upset me most was that the iPhone 6 does not have that solid and polished design that was in the iPhone 4/4S and even the iPhone 5S, the iPhone 6 looked mediocre, at least at least in the photographs. Secondly, the new iPhones didn’t bring anything new; they didn’t even show us the notorious sapphire glass. There was no breakthrough, but the iPhone still remains one of best smartphones? Or not? Let's figure it out, and since the iPhone 6 cannot be considered in isolation from previous models, this review is also a comparison with the iPhone 5S.
Packaging and accessories
The packaging and components of the iPhone have not changed over seven generations of devices. So the iPhone 6 has only slightly increased the dimensions of the box, which now also lacks any images. Personally, I don't know if I like it new design packaging or not. On the one hand, the pure white box looks unusual, on the other, it’s somehow too simple.
Inside the box, everything is the same: on top, in a special plastic tray, lies the device itself; underneath there is an envelope with instructions, stickers and a paper clip; Under the envelope are the headset, power adapter and lightning cable. There are no additional accessories included in the package.
The headset is packed in a plastic case, these are still the same EarPods. The sync cable is one meter long. Despite the increased battery capacity, the iPhone still comes with a power adapter with an output current of 1 Amp.
Appearance and ergonomics
It so happened that the company updates the iPhone according to the principle - a kind of analogue of Intel’s “tick-tock”, for “tick” Apple changes the design of the device, for “tock” it radically changes the hardware filling. The next “tick” brought us not only a change in the appearance and shape of the case, but also a significant increase in the screen diagonal. The main materials of the case remain the same: aluminum alloy and Gorilla Glass 3. In the first reviews, I often heard that in real life the iPhone 6 looks better than in photographs, but this is not so. In real life, the iPhone 6 looks exactly as it does in the photographs. I can’t say that the design is bad, the iPhone 6 in this regard is still more interesting than most devices, but according to my subjective feelings, it does not have the completeness that the iPhone 5S has. On the other hand, the new product uses an interesting design solution, when the glass covering the screen is bent at the edges and smoothly transitions into the body.
The dimensions of the device are 138.1 * 67 * 6.9 mm, weight - 129 grams, which is significantly more than the iPhone 5S. Because I'm constantly testing various smartphones, for me such dimensions were not a revelation, but to a person who has been using the fifth or fourth iPhone for a long time, the iPhone 6 will most likely seem like a shovel. A smartphone fits into a man’s trouser pocket without any problems, and it’s almost convenient to carry it there. The comfort of wearing an iPhone 6 in women's tight jeans is a big question. Due to the rounded ends, the iPhone 6 fits comfortably in my hand; surprisingly, I can still reach the top left edge with my right thumb without gripping the device. But we must take into account that I have big hands with long fingers. In any case, at the OS level in the iPhone 6 there is an option to omit top part screen by double tapping the Home button.
The entire front surface is protected by third-generation Gorilla Glass. Below it are located: a screen, an earpiece, sensors, a front camera, and a Home button. On the left side there are volume buttons and a silent mode switch. The top end is empty, and the Power button has been moved to the right end, here it is adjacent to the nanoSIM card tray. There are no additional controls in the iPhone 6. At the bottom end there are: a headset jack, a lightning interface, a speakerphone and a main microphone.
On the back surface in the upper left corner there are: a camera eye, an additional microphone and a paired Truetone LED flash. Here we come to probably the only objective flaw in the iPhone 6 design – the protruding camera eye. I have a feeling that the peephole will quickly become covered with scratches despite the fact that it is covered with sapphire crystal. To be fair, it is worth noting that the protruding camera eye does not in any way affect the ease of use of the device.
Screen
One of the main changes brought by the restyling of the iPhone affected the IPS screen, the diagonal of which increased from 4 to 4.7 inches. At the same time, PPI remained the same - 326, the resolution is now 1334-by-750 pixels. Other image parameters have also been improved evolutionarily. The contrast almost doubled, 1400:1 versus 800:1 in the iPhone 5S; although the brightness retained its nominal value of 500 cd/m², in practice it was also slightly increased.
Subjectively, the screen has become better, although not dramatically. The perception of the picture has improved mainly due to a decrease in thickness protective glass and reducing the number of screen layers. I remember how, after changing from iPhone 4 to iPhone 5, I was amazed by the latter’s screen due to the reduction in the distance between the glass and the matrix; the image seemed to lie on the surface. So in the iPhone 6 this feeling has subjectively intensified! The touch screen can process up to 10 touches simultaneously.
The screen has the highest possible viewing angles for an LCD, excellent contrast, and a very effective anti-glare filter. In direct sunlight, the iPhone 5S screen behaves well; in the iPhone 6, behavior in the sun has become almost ideal. There is automatic backlight adjustment, it works flawlessly. Working with touch screen gloves are not provided; the sensor does not react to foreign objects; in this regard, Apple, unfortunately, is conservative.
Hardware platform and performance
The smartphone runs on Apple's own A8 SoC, which is not a big.LITTLE system. The system-on-chip is manufactured using a 20nm process technology and consists of: a 64-bit CPU, which includes two Typhoon cores (ARMv8-A architecture) operating at frequencies up to 1.4 GHz; quad-core GPU – IMG PowerVR GX6450 supporting OpenGL ES 3.1 and Direct3D 10.0; and the M8 coprocessor is responsible for background tracking of physical activity. It is not entirely clear how the latter differs from its predecessor, the M7, but from what I have noticed, I can note that the iPhone 6 can track the number of flights as you climb the stairs, while the iPhone 5S cannot do this.
From a technical point of view, the only bottleneck of the A8 platform is volume RAM DDR3 equal to 1GB. In practice, in most situations this does not cause inconvenience; problems arise only when opening large number heavy browser tabs. The permanent memory can be 16/64/128 GB, while in terms of price, the version with 64 GB of memory took the place of last year's iPhone 5S with 32 GB, and the version with 128 GB replaced the iPhone 5S with 64 GB. Traditionally, the device does not have a slot for microSD cards. The review involves an iPhone 6 with 64GB of memory on board, of which 56GB is available to the user.
Today, the iPhone 6 is the most powerful iOS device; in Antutu, the smartphone scored 48,748 points, leaving it far behind iPad Air. Despite some problems with the stability of iOS8, I did not notice any freezes or slowdowns in the interface during the entire period of use, as well as any difference in performance with the iPhone 5S. In terms of 3D gaming performance, the iPhone is still best solution. Games adapted for Metal look more interesting, the picture in the same Modern Combat 5 on the iPhone 6 looks better than, for example, on the Xiaomi Mi4 based on the Snapdragon 801 at maximum quality settings.
Cellular communications and interfaces
Unlike the iPhone 5S, which was produced in five different modifications with different communication modules, the iPhone 6 has only two modifications and both will work in Russian LTE networks– these are A1549 and A1586, the latter is also intended for official sales in the Russian Federation. There is only one SIM card slot in the device, nano type. The smartphone is equipped with a Qualcomm MDM9625 modem, which firstly means support for all possible LTE frequencies, and secondly, the theoretical downstream data transfer rate can reach 150 Mbit/s. Unfortunately, on the day of the test in the center of St. Petersburg, I was unable to find a place where I could get a speed of more than 25 Mbit/s.
From wireless interfaces The iPhone 6 has Bluetooth 4.0 and dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac standards. There is a GPS/GLONASS receiver with A-GPS support. The device has an NFC module, but it is proprietary and can only be used for making payments. Apple Pay.
Battery and autonomy
The iPhone 6 has a 1810 mAh battery, versus 1560 mAh in the iPhone 5S. The package includes a power adapter with an output current of 5V/1A. But to test charge the smartphone, I decided to use charger included with iPad Air. Unfortunately, as practice has shown, the iPhone 6 does not use increased output current power, but limits it within the standard 5V/1A. The smartphone charges up to 75% in 1 hour and 10 minutes, and up to 100% in 2 hours and 20 minutes.
The manufacturer claims an increase in autonomy in various modes by 1-4 hours compared to the previous model. In practice, the increase in autonomy is not so obvious. In similar operating modes, the iPhone 6 will last about the same as the iPhone 5S. Testing showed the following results:
- while listening to music with headphones on maximum volume with the screen turned off, the smartphone worked for about 50 hours;
- watching video from the device’s memory at 50% backlight brightness and maximum sound volume in headphones – a little more than 11 hours;
- active browsing (constantly opening new tabs, actively scrolling pages, etc.) via Wi-Fi at 50% backlight brightness – 6 hours and 40 minutes;
- 3D games (Asphalt 8) at 50% backlight brightness – 3 hours and 40 minutes.
In mixed operating mode (calls, SMS, browsing, installing and testing applications, some 3D games) and active LTE, the smartphone can last from early morning until late evening with 5-5.5 hours of screen operation. It is worth considering that the autonomy of the device is greatly influenced by the quality of the coating. cellular network and screen backlight brightness.
Cameras, photo and video quality
The main camera is built on an 8-megapixel sensor, presumably from Sony. The lens consists of five lenses, has an equivalent focal length of 29 mm and an aperture of F/2.2. HDR is supported in hardware, the maximum possible ISO is 2000. Compared to the iPhone 5S, the face detection system has been improved and focusing speed has been increased. The system camera does not have the ability to manually adjust any shooting parameters other than exposure compensation. But the corresponding APIs in iOS8 allow third-party applications to adjust everything: shutter speed, ISO, white balance (select from presets), focus. The flash consists of two LEDs of different color temperatures (Truetone).
Comparing the iPhone 6 with its predecessor, I did not see any difference in the quality of the resulting photos. The only time I was confused by the result was when I tried to photograph a red tractor in one of the yards. In the photo taken on the iPhone 5S, a white veil is clearly visible, in the photo from the iPhone 6 there is no veil. The smartphone records video in a maximum resolution of 1920*1080 pixels @ 60 fps and a bitrate of 25.4 Mbit/s for FullHD mode. The device does not have a mode for shooting video in 4K resolution. Sound is recorded in mono with a sampling rate of 44.1 KHz and a bitrate of 64 Kbps. The quality of the final image is above average; subjectively it produces better quality video.
What I found extremely interesting was the ability to shoot video at a speed of 240 frames per second, although only in HD resolution. The total bitrate in this case is 40 Mbit/s.
Sound quality
The external speaker is traditionally located at the bottom end. The speaker has a good volume reserve; in comparison with the iPhone 5S, the volume has increased by about a third without losing sound quality. The increase in headphone volume is not so obvious, but it is there. I didn’t notice any difference between the iPhone 6 and iPhone 5S in the sound quality of music in headphones. The smartphone has an equalizer, but you can only configure it by selecting one of the presets; FM radio does not.
Operating system features
The smartphone came with iOS 8.0 pre-installed from the factory; after unpacking, I immediately updated it to iOS 8.0.2. For the most part this operating system It looks the same on all supported devices and has similar functionality, but there are also elements that are characteristic only of the iPhone 6. The first thing that caught my eye was the appearance of an additional row of icons in the Standard interface display mode, then for the vast majority of applications there is no optimization for the increased screen diagonal. This is expressed in an absurd-looking keyboard and overly large fonts; I did not notice any pixelation or outright soapiness. I think that within two to three months the most popular applications from major developers will be adapted for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Below is an example of what the adapted Evernote application and the non-adapted VK application look like.
The system now has the ability to move the top half of the screen down by double tapping the home button. In the Camera application, in Slow mode, you can choose between two shooting options: 120 fps and 240 fps. Video shooting in standard mode is by default in FullHD resolution at 30 fps, but in Settings you can switch the shooting speed to 60 fps. Safari displays UI elements differently in landscape mode. Yes, perhaps that's all.
During a week of intensive testing of the device, I did not notice any serious problems in its operation. All native applications work as they should and without glitches, some third party applications Occasionally they crash, but iOS is currently not entirely stable. The disadvantages of the iPhone 6 include its dimensions and the camera protruding from the body. The new product has many more advantages! We can draw a brief conclusion on this parameter: in everyday life the 6s is faster, but the 5S is still great and will not irritate you, you can use it quite comfortably.

Slow mode is present on both models, but on the 6s it is much slower. You can shoot in slow motion. The 6s can do 240 frames per second, but the 5S is much less. But most owners, of course, do not use this function.

Even if you level the quality at 1080 on the iPhone 6s, it will still record in 60 frames, and this is clearly more high quality.

Photos were taken against the sun to make it as difficult as possible for both smartphones to photograph. The photographs were taken at almost the same moment. On the 5S they are somewhat darker, as is the video. On an older device, the video mode is 1080 x 30 frames per second. On iPhone 6s – at 60 frames per second. When you turn the phone, the image on the iPhone 6s does not shake so much. It is clear that stabilization, which was added to the newest handset, also intervenes here, but the shooting frame rate also plays a role.
Let's move on to the autofocus test. Let's try to aim first at some distant object, and then at a closer object. The iPhone 6s immediately caught the focus. In 5S you have to configure it manually.
How do cameras work differently at night? We will be filming in extremely unfavorable conditions. On the iPhone 5S, the photo gives off a yellowish tint and a halo is created around the light sources. The video is the same: a slight shade of yellow and there are halos around glowing objects.
