A mobile phone screen is a very fragile and important component. Damage to this part makes the operation of the smartphone almost impossible, but what should you do if you still receive a defect? You can try to take the initiative into your own hands and tackle the repair procedures yourself. This kind of entrepreneurship can save you a good amount of money. How to change the glass on your phone? There are instructions that will allow you to repair the device yourself at home. We will pay attention to these instructions in this article.

Features of repairing glass of a mobile gadget at home

When falling, most often the touchscreen takes the brunt of the impact. A huge number of requests to service center associated with this type of breakdown.

Important! This prospect is not very encouraging, since some cases of replacement in workshops will cost you half the cost of the mobile phone itself. This situation is caused by the fact that many device models use OGS screens.

In order to divide the display into a touchscreen and a matrix, acquiring the simplest tools (a vacuum suction cup, a Phillips screwdriver, a sharp knife and a thin flat object) will not be enough. All replacements usually occur in the following order:

  1. Disassembling the device.
  2. Removing the damaged module from the housing.
  3. Strong fixation and heating of the display using special equipment.
  4. Separation of the matrix from the touchscreen using a special nylon thread.
  5. Cleaning the matrix from technical glue.
  6. Placing the component on a special stencil for subsequent application of photopolymer colorless glue.
  7. Placing the sensor in a stencil to remove excess glue between layers.
  8. Irradiation with ultraviolet rays for rapid hardening of the glue.
  9. Returning the module to the case and assembling the device in the reverse order.

Important! As you may have noticed, without special equipment you won’t be able to do the repairs yourself. Unfortunately for most users, OGS screens are installed on almost all modern smartphones and all independent attempts to replace them are only relevant in cases where you are interested in gaining experience and don’t mind breaking your device.

How to change the protective glass on your phone? If you are still filled with courage and desire to return the device to stable operation, then there is one way for you.

Disassembly should only be undertaken by those users who have some experience in this area. It will be very difficult for a beginner to avoid new damage. To carry out disassembly, you need to use the following tools and available means:

  • A small set of Phillips and Torx screwdrivers for disassembling the case of a mobile phone.
  • Plastic spatula, unwanted debit card or guitar pick.
  • The most common hair dryer, capable of heating the screen to about 80 degrees Celsius.
  • Thin nylon thread or guitar string. These tools will be needed to divide the module into its component parts.
  • Work or medical rubber gloves.
  • Rubber suction cup with ring.
  • Some kind of perforated metal sheet and about a dozen bolts and nuts. The length of the bolts should be about 2-3 cm.
  • A special glue that hardens when exposed to UV (ultraviolet) radiation.
  • Ultraviolet lamp, pure alcohol or glass cleaner and computer wipes.

Important! Shaped screwdrivers, technical picks and plastic spatulas with suction cups are often supplied with a new touchscreen. It is best to use the above replacement tools.

Replacing glass on your phone yourself looks something like this:

  • First you need to disassemble the device body. The task is simplified if the mobile phone is equipped with a removable cover and battery. After disassembling the case, take a screwdriver and unscrew all the screws that secure the elements to the case. On YouTube you can find hundreds detailed instructions for carrying out this procedure.
  • Now you need to take on the display module itself. We take a hairdryer and warm up the smartphone around the perimeter. We “grab” the module with a suction cup and pull it slightly towards ourselves, not forgetting to warm up the entire structure with a hairdryer. Try not to damage the cables when removing the part.
  • Now we need to prepare for delamination of the extracted module. Simply place it on a pre-prepared metal plane with holes and screw bolts around the perimeter of the module so that it does not move.
  • Let's move on to the bundle itself. We take the same hair dryer and thoroughly warm up the matrix to about 70-90 degrees Celsius. Now we take a nylon thread or a guitar string in our hands, grab it by the edge, and, continuing to warm it up, “cut” the components.
  • If everything worked out for you, then clean the matrix from the remnants of old glue using alcohol and napkins. All this must be done very carefully to avoid damaging the screen.

Important! You should wear gloves to avoid leaving any greasy marks. If the layer of glue is removed without problems, then wipe the component with alcohol one more time.

  • We coat the matrix with new glue, in accordance with its new touchscreen. Now we press lightly on the structure and remove the glue protruding from the sides.
  • You need to irradiate the glue under a UV lamp for about 30 minutes.
  • We begin installing the module if there are no traces of the old glue left. We place the module on the cable and lubricate the body around the entire perimeter with glue.
  • We glue the whole thing onto the body, wait for it to dry and assemble the gadget in reverse order.

Important! Don't forget to check the functionality of the device.

How to replace the protective glass on a phone if it is not OGS technology?

Changing the glass on a smartphone

If your device uses a screen with an air gap, then you can safely take on the replacement. This is exactly the case when you will be able to save 100%. But this method also requires a certain base of technical knowledge and the ability to use a soldering iron. You will need all the same tools that were used in the previous method, and you need to follow these instructions:

  1. We disassemble the phone in the same way as in the previous method.
  2. We remove the screen using a hairdryer, place the suction cup on the touchscreen and remove it.
  3. Now you need to get rid of the damaged part by sending the obsolete component for scrap. After that we clean everything workspaces from glue or tape.
  4. We install a new component. Before installation, remove the film from the matrix module. Thin strips of double-sided tape or B-7000 glue are applied along the perimeter of the structure. Place the sensor in its rightful place and press it until dry. Don't forget to remove any spilled drops.
  5. If soldering was used to attach the module, then take a soldering iron in your hands and fix the part around the perimeter using solder.
  6. We reassemble the entire phone in reverse order and check its functionality.

The main function of a smartphone's protective glass is to take the blow, protecting the touchscreen from damage. When this happens, it often becomes unusable, becoming covered with chips, cracks and other damage. The level of protection from this drops significantly; in addition, the view of the display deteriorates, and the smartphone loses its attractiveness. To change the cover to a new one, you must first remove the broken protective glass from the phone. And here difficulties arise, which will be discussed in the material.

Precautions

There is one important point to consider before removing the old protective glass from your phone. Thanks to a perfectly smooth surface touch screen, the glass sticks to it very firmly. Usually it is held in place not by glue (although this also happens), but by electrostatic forces. The two flat surfaces are in very strong contact, making it impossible to remove the glass simply by lifting it with your fingernail. If you take the first available tool (like a knife), there is a risk of damaging the smartphone’s display and its case.

One silicone suction cup is also not enough. If you stick to heavily damaged glass, a vacuum will not form inside under it, and when force is applied, it will come off. If the grip is good, the suction cup will not come off, but another problem arises. The sensor is fixed in the case using double-sided adhesive tape or glue, the tensile strength of which is lower than that of the touchscreen and protective glass. If you overdo it, you can completely tear off the screen module, damaging its cables. Therefore, you need to act thoughtfully and consistently.

How to remove glass from a phone and stick a new one on

Before you remove the broken protective glass from your phone and replace it, you need to prepare and arm yourself with a set of tools and tools.

For this you will need:

  • pick, spatula or thin plastic card (preferably 2 pieces);
  • silicone suction cup - optional;
  • lint-free napkin;
  • glass cleaner (preferably containing alcohol), alcohol, vodka, or alcohol-based perfume (perfume, cologne) - to choose from;
  • medical gloves - optional.

Often, new protective glass can be equipped with the necessary accessories.

The dismantling procedure is extremely simple and takes a minute.

  • Before removing the protective glass from your phone, you need to wash your hands with soap and dry thoroughly, or simply wear rubber gloves. This is necessary to prevent fingerprints and smudges from appearing on the surface of the screen.
  • On broken glass, you should find the most intact corner where there are no chips or other damage (or there is, but in the smallest amount). You need to attach it there with a suction cup, pressing it against the screen.
  • The corner to which the suction cup is glued must be pryed with a pick, spatula or suction cup so that the edge of the glass peels off. To do this, you need to simultaneously pull the suction cup slightly towards you. It is important not to overdo it so as not to rip off the screen before there is a gap between it and the glass! If you don’t have a suction cup at hand, you can simply smoothly insert the pick deeper into the resulting gap.
  • As the glass peels off, you should deepen the pick/spatula/card. If the screen is large, it is recommended to work with two tools at once, moving them in different directions.
  • The final touch is to pull the suction cup towards you until the glass comes off completely. You can grab the edge with your fingers and do the same.

When replacing the protective glass on a smartphone, few people do not worry about following the rules and perform re-gluing with improvised tools. As a result: there are scratches on the phone, the coating does not apply evenly, becomes covered in bubbles, or simply does not adhere tightly

Instructions: how to install protective glass on your phone

We have prepared a short instruction manual for those who want to install the glass themselves.

The article contains basic information, but to complete the picture we recommend watching the video with detailed description installation stages.

Removing old glass: what is important to remember

You must understand that the glass does not stick to the screen due to a special adhesive coating. The adhesion of the film to the smooth surface of the touchscreen occurs due to statics. An attempt to remove it by prying it with a fingernail or (much worse) with a knife will end in damage to the screen and body of the phone.

Even using a special suction cup can lead to unpleasant consequences. Remember, perform all actions smoothly. By pressing hard on the Velcro, you risk damaging the cables or tearing off the screen module. A vacuum is formed between the glass and the film, which will resist the adhesion of the coatings. But even if the suction cup adheres well to the film, there is a chance of damage to the sensor when removing the protective glass. Therefore, act consistently and carefully.

What to prepare for installing protective glass:

    mediator (or thin plastic card) - it’s better to take 2 pieces;

    silicone suction cup (if you already have reinstallation experience, you can do without Velcro);

    napkin or piece of lint-free cloth;

    glass cleaner containing alcohol (pure alcohol or perfume will also work);

    medical gloves (silicone or rubber).

    Once armed with these tools, the job will take no more than two minutes.

Brief description of the process

Before you begin, make sure your hands are free of dust or lint. It is impossible to see the smallest particles on your fingers, so it is better to play it safe and wear medical gloves. They are thin and fit snugly on the hand, so they will not interfere with work.

Next, install the suction cup on the area of the phone with damaged glass, where there are fewer fragments and cracks. Carefully apply the Velcro to the corner of the screen, and then press down slightly and glue it to the glass. Take the pick and pull the suction cup towards you, only gradually increase the force, otherwise the glass will come off along with the screen.

As soon as you feel the glass peeling off, deepen the pick.

When the glass around the perimeter peels off ~80%, feel free to pull the suction cup and tear off the old screen.

Gluing new glass

Before applying new coating, remove dust and fingerprints. A lint-free cloth is suitable for this: first moisten the screen with glass cleaning compound and degrease the surface using a prepared cloth.

    Grab the protective glass by the edges (put on gloves first).

    Carefully remove the adhesive protective surface on the film (keep the glass near the phone, otherwise airborne dust will stick while you transfer the film).

    Place the glass as close to the screen as possible (align it relative to the center, check that all holes for buttons, connectors and the camera pass through the film).

    Slowly lower the protective covering onto the screen, pressing and simultaneously smoothing from the center to the corners. Use a dry, lint-free cloth or thin plastic card for this.

    Remove the film applied for protection during transportation.

It is not always possible to glue glass to a phone without getting dust and lint. If you see that debris has gotten under the film, peel off the glass exactly to the place where there is dirt.

You can also use a compressor, a technical vacuum cleaner, or a can of compressed air to blow out dust particles.

If you don't have anything like this at hand, use tweezers.

As soon as you remove the dirt, glue the glass back.

There are two camps: some argue that you should not replace the glass separately from the display, others, as you may have guessed, are of the opposite opinion. In this article we will look at all sides.
At search query“Replacing the display” you will probably be offered options for replacing the glass, the cost of this procedure is always lower than replacing the entire module, and even at the same time your original matrix remains. I think those who have installed cheap copies of displays know that color rendition, viewing angles suffer, and what can I say, there may be problems with the operation of the touchscreen.

It's so simple! I'll go watch a video on YouTube and change the glass myself

I hasten to disappoint you, this cannot be done without special equipment. Let's start with the fact that there are two technologies for “gluing” new glass:
The first is using ultraviolet glue.

Cheapness
+ hides micro-scratches on the polarizer

Appearance of yellow spots
- the need to change the backlight
+color distortion
- not compatible with 3D Touch

This glue is difficult to evenly distribute over the entire surface of the matrix (this is, of course, not noticeable to the eye), but after a while a yellow spot forms in the place of excess (increased pressure) of glue, and this is already unpleasant. Since this is glue, it gets under the backlight (with the exception of amolds), as a result of which stains are visible, some people remove the backlight before the procedure or install a new one, in the case of iPhones this is not a problem, since you can buy it everywhere, but if we are talking about Lg, Sony, Meizu, then this is quite difficult. And even if you have changed the backlight, there are almost always places where the UV rays did not hit the glue and it did not harden. There is a huge chance that with active (and not so active) movements of the phone, the backlight will again be filled with glue.

Second, more modern technology, use of wasp film

Pros:
+can be used on any phone model
+no impact on backlighting
+does not turn yellow
+ apply evenly over the entire area

- expensive equipment

General disadvantages include the risk of damage to the matrix during removal; if the technician is experienced, the risk is minimized, but still not zero. Our service center has a 95% success rate in this procedure, which is a very high figure.

Is the glass original?

The original is the one that you installed initially, then there are copies, and they already have good quality (as they say “original”) and poor quality (stores like to call them copy A, the more “A” the “cooler”). If they tell you that this is an original, ask for certificates from the manufacturer’s factory; if there are none (they won’t be available), then these are just empty words. Yes, I understand that the glass that we replace at the service center is as close in quality as possible to the original, but calling them by this word would not be fair to the client. This is something other service centers happily use, calling everything they have in stock an original and, of course, people go because it’s an “original.”

Why so expensive? I know how much glass costs!

Yes, indeed, the price of the glass itself (touchscreen) is not the key to the final cost. In terms of time, replacing the display takes on average 20-40 minutes, depending on specific model and master's skills. Replacing glass increases repair time by two to three times. It is also necessary to have an experienced specialist, since a small number of craftsmen are fluent in this technology.
To replace glass, you need specialized equipment, the total cost of which is close to megapc.

Why make it so complicated when you can change the module right away?

You will always have time to change the module. Take for example the display on the iPhone 6s costs $140, while glass replacement costs $60. Let's go through the Chinese, Meizu Pro 6 - it costs $155 to replace the display module, and $55 to replace the glass, and there are many such examples on Xiaomi, Samsung, OnePlus, etc. We replace glass on many models. We have not yet touched upon the topic of the quality of Chinese display modules, color rendition, viewing angles and other characteristics.

What if it doesn't work out?

During removal of the display from the frame, cutting on the separator, gluing under the press and in the pressure chamber, a large load is placed on the matrix. We warn the client about all possible risks associated with replacing glass, and give the opportunity to save with a probability of 95%. In 5% of cases, it is necessary to replace the entire display module.

I plan to devote the next article to the technological stages of replacing glass in my service center step by step. Write in the comments if this topic is interesting, would you like to read articles about phone repair? Would you like to follow developments, new equipment, ways to attract customers?

As we wrote earlier, the main reason why people turn to our service center "Remont48" in Lipetsk for repairs of phones and iPhones is broken glass, broken touchscreen (touch screen), broken screen (no or distorted image).

When the display does not show an image or shows a grid or blots, the picture twitches, everything is clear to both the master and the client - the display needs to be changed. And as a rule, the display is damaged together with the touchscreen (touch glass). Therefore, both the touchscreen and the display have to be replaced.

In modern mobile phones The display module is installed. The display module is the gluing of the display (screen) and the touchscreen (touch glass) into a single whole. Moreover, they are glued not along the edges, but over the entire area! Therefore, changing one without the other will not work.

For example, if your phone fell and the touch glass (touchscreen) broke, and the display shows a perfect picture, you will still have to change the display module, because it will be difficult to separate the broken touch glass from the display without damaging the latter. The chance of successfully separating the display module is only 50%.

The separation of the display module occurs on a separator, which heats the glue and makes it soft. Using a special string, which is inserted between the display and the touch glass, the adhesive layer is carefully cut off. If the string touches the display, it is damaged. In the picture on the left there is a damaged display (unsuccessful separation), on the right the display remains intact. There is no way to predict the outcome of the separation.

But separating the display module without damaging the display is only half the battle. After separation, the display must be cleaned of any remaining adhesive. After this, you need to glue the display and touch glass over the entire area. Under no circumstances should you leave an air gap between the touch glass and the display, as was done before on older phone models. Here the gap between the sensor and the display is much smaller and the touchscreen will stick to the screen when touched. And the main drawback is that the viewing angle will narrow and the brightness will drop. In sunny weather, you will not see anything at all on this display!

On some phone models, it is possible to replace only the touch glass (touchscreen) separately. These are mostly old or budget phone models.

Modern Samsung phones(A3, A5, A7, J3, J5, J7, S3, S4, S5, S6, S7, S8), iPhones (iPhone 4, 4s, 5, 5c, 5s, 6, 6plus, 6s, 6s plus, 7, 7plus, 8, 10) are equipped with protective glass. The sensor of such phones is placed on the display, and the glass performs a protective function. Quite often, even if the glass is severely damaged after a fall or impact, the sensor and display continue to work properly. And in this case, you can try to replace only the glass. But here again, you need to use expensive equipment and high-quality consumables.

Some "craftsmen" can offer replacement glass at an inexpensive cost and will glue the glass with LOCA glue. This type of adhesive has not been used in display production and repair for a long time, but it does not require special equipment to use it. LOCA glue, especially cheap ones, turns yellow over time, bubbles may appear between the glass and the display, the display backlight can be filled with this glue when replacing the glass.

Currently, OCA glue (film) is used to glue glass to a display. To glue glass to a display, you need a laminator and a separator to remove air bubbles between the glass and the display. This is the only way to achieve high-quality gluing without bubbles.

On Samsung EDGE series phones, the sides of the display are rounded, so you cannot separate the glass from the display using a string and a separator. To do this, you need a freezer that cools down to -150 degrees Celsius.

Low temperatures destroy the adhesive and the glass easily separates from the display. Then you need to clean the display from any glue residue and glue the new glass using special equipment.

Replacement of glass only on Samsung phones, Apple iPhone, touch glass on modern phones (Xiaomi, Meizu, Lg, Sony Xperia, Asus Zenfone, etc.) is cheaper than replacing an entire display module. But in order to replace glass or a touchscreen efficiently and with a guarantee, expensive equipment and high-quality consumables are required. Not every service center has all this, and if you are offered to replace only the glass or sensor, ask whether there will be a warranty on the work? It must be at least 3 months old. During this time, if the glass was replaced using a homemade method using Loca UV glue, the display module may begin to unstick, turn yellow, air bubbles will appear, and the sensor may fail in some areas or completely.

Currently, our service center is ready to offer replacement of the touch glass (touchscreen) on phones where this is provided or replacement of the display module. We always have original display modules for Samsung phones in stock at our warehouse. They are expensive, but this is factory quality, which guarantees the operation of the display module without any problems. Apple iPhone comes with modules of different quality classes (AAA, REF, Orig, Orig 100%). For other smartphones, display modules are supplied with a quality class of at least AAA or orig.

Before installation, we always check the display module for possible problems in operation, which eliminates the installation of defective spare parts in almost 100% of cases. But some defects in operation may appear after a week or two, so we always provide a guarantee for the installed touchscreen, display or display module.

Currently, there are a huge number of offers to buy a touchscreen, screen, display module in an online store or order from China. After watching the video on replacing the display, you can try to replace it yourself. But if you have no experience at all in this matter, and there are no special tools (screwdrivers, picks, spatula, separator), you can easily damage the cable and the phone’s system board. Also keep in mind that static electricity tends to accumulate on your hands. When you touch with your hands system board phone, a discharge may occur, the potential of which will be sufficient to damage the microcircuit. This will lead to partial or complete inoperability of the device.

As for spare parts ordered from China, they mostly sell defective spare parts at retail. Think for yourself, who would sell a high-quality display at a low price and even with free shipping?

Our service center purchases spare parts from time-tested suppliers who work directly with factories and purchase a huge batch of touch glasses, displays, and display modules. Due to large volumes of purchases, the price of spare parts for the supplier is low. Our purchase volumes are also not small, so the supplier provides us with a good discount on spare parts. As a result, we are ready to offer you a replacement touch glass, display or display module high quality at a relatively inexpensive price!
