So I recently updated my GT60 0NE"s Windows 8 to 8.1, but now I"m deciding to just completely reformat my computer back to OEM factory settings.

I have read that there are some issues regarding the function of the F3 recovery partition (I haven"t personally tried it yet.) I"ve also read that another option is to use the built-in refresh/reset function in Windows 8 instead if the recovery partition doesn't work.

My questions are:

1. Which one should I use? Assuming I can access the OEM factory settings recovery partition, should I use that or the built-in Windows 8 reset function?

2. If I use the built-in Windows 8 reset function, will it reinstall Windows without any of my laptop drivers and/or delete the recovery partition?

3. If I reformat my laptop using either method, will it not recognize the RAID 0 setup of my C drive? That and built-in drivers are the main reason I want to stick with the OEM recovery partition. Although hunting for the drivers will be easy, I have no clue how to set up RAID 0 (it came as default when I bought my laptop.)

3. I have 2 recovery partitions: BIOS_RVY and winRE_tools. What are they for? If possible, I"d like to keep the option of having the OEM recovery partition for future reformats for the drivers (unless it"s not needed with the new Windows 8 reset function), but these recovery partitions are installed in different drives (one is on my C drive and the other is on my D drive.)

4. I am currently using the BETA EC firmware that prevents throttling. Will reformatting my laptop cause it to revert back to the original EC firmware? (I assume it won't since it's a firmware update.)

I hope someone can answer my questions. Thanks in advance!

1. I would use the OEM Factory Recovery partition(using F3 during boot). This will reset you back to your original settings as if you just bought the notebook.

2. It will essentially make the laptop as if you just brought it home from purchasing it. Your recovery partition will remain intact.

3. It will recognize the RAID 0 most likely (Windows should have the required Intel raid drivers built in to recognize it). But you will have to find all the drivers and install them on your own. You won't need to worry about the RAID drivers that much honestly.

4. BIOS_RVY is for recovering via the F3 option mentioned above. I"m not sure what the winRE_tools are for.

5. Reformatting the hard drive will not effect the EC firmware. It is separate.

Thanks for the answers darkhawk. Two last questions:

1. What exactly is the difference between using the OEM Factory Recovery partition through F3, and using the built-in windows 8.1 reset function? Don"t they both restore to factory settings? I was thinking the difference was that OEM = restore to how you got your laptop originally, and Win 8.1 reset = clean install w/o any drivers or programs aside from basic windows OS.

2. After I upgraded to Windows 8.1 my screen "blinks" after I input my password and press enter to login. It"s not a black screen of death or anything, it literally just blinks once and proceeds as normal. Is that something I should be worried about? I have not been able to find anything online about it (most search results talk about black screen problems or flickering problems, while mine is literally just an ADD annoyance.) This only started happening after I upgraded from 8 to 8.1

1. I can"t really comment on the Windows 8.1 function. I haven"t looked into it. And I wouldn't trust it. I trust Windows to be an OS and that"s it. Anything more fancy than that, and it"s questionable in my mind if it will work. The F3 recovery I know will work, and I"ve used it myself a few times. But that"s more a matter of preference. I know that the F3 OEM restore makes it like you just bought the notebook.

2. I can"t comment on this issue. I haven"t upgraded to Windows 8.1 (I see no reason, personally), so I don"t know anything about it. But, if the computer works like normal, and you have no issues....I wouldn't worry about it.

We present a guide for installing Windows 8.1 Professional from a flash drive. This is done very simply: all stages take place in automatic mode, the user only needs to select a section for the system and enter personal data. However, even such a simple procedure has its own nuances, which we will discuss later.

First you should find out its system requirements:

System Windows requirements 8.1

  • Processor with clock frequency not less than 1 GHz. It must support PAE, NX and SIMD (These are processor functions that provide increased performance. They are needed for the latest generation operating systems to work correctly).
  • RAM – at least 1 GB for a 32-bit system. For 64-bit versions you will need at least 2 GB of RAM. Free space on the hard drive - at least 16 GB (for the x64 version - at least 20 GB). These numbers correspond to a “clean” OS, that is, without any built-in software. The more of it, the better.
  • A video card with at least 128 MB of memory and support for Dirext X (versions no lower than 9.0). Such data is only needed to activate the Aero visual theme. If your computer has an integrated (built-in) video card, then in the BIOS settings you need to set maximum performance. It borrows video memory from RAM.
  • Free USB input.
  • Internet access (optional). You will need it for activation, as well as for automatic download updates. In its absence, you can postpone this setting.

For convenience, the whole process is divided into 2 stages. At the first stage, we will consider preparing for installation (or reinstallation), create bootable USB flash drive. On the second one we will work with the installer.

Stage 1. Preparation

Creating a bootable USB flash drive

Download Windows image 8.1 we need:

What are these images?

These are original MSDN images downloaded from the official Microsoft website. The only change is that the ability to select the system edition during installation is unlocked. No files are affected and the system is not activated.

We write the required one to an empty flash drive, following the instructions from

Saving important data

Before you begin installation, you will need to perform a few simple steps:

  • Create important data.
  • Just in case, find driver discs in old boxes. If you have any non-standard equipment (for example, a steering wheel), then you should make sure that the drivers for it are compatible with Windows 8.

Setting the boot order in the BIOS

BIOS is a built-in motherboard a program that allows you to control certain parameters of your PC hardware. It allows you to set the main parameters even if there is no installed OS. So, to run the Windows 8.1 installer, you need. To get into the BIOS, you must press a certain key immediately after turning it on. Usually this is F2 or Del, but there may be other options (F8-F12, Esc and others). On some Lenovo laptops There is a special round button for entering the BIOS (has a logo with an arrow).

Once in the menu, you need to change the device boot priority:

  • Use the arrows to open the item Boot. Inside it we select Device Priority.
  • The boot priority menu will open. Most likely it will be listed in the first place Hard Disk.
  • We need to place the selected media (CD or flash drive) in first place. To do this, use the Enter key and the up and down arrows.
  • At the end, select the item "Save and exit" for the changes to take effect.

Stage 2. Installation

All the preliminary stages have been completed, the turn of the decisive chord has come. Now let's figure out step by step how to install Windows 8.1. It’s worth noting right away that the OS installation process has been significantly simplified; almost all stages are carried out automatically.

Step #1. We insert the flash drive into the USB port and reboot. During boot, a message with the following content: “Press any key to boot” should appear on the screen. It means that you need to press any key (this should be done quickly). If everything is fine, the Windows icon will appear.

Please note: if such a message does not appear, there may be two reasons: the boot order is incorrect, or the flash drive was written with errors.

Step #2. Language settings. The first point is the system language. The second is the format in which time and currency will be displayed. The third is the keyboard input method. We set Russian everywhere and click “Next”.

Step #3. Start of installation. A window will appear in which you need to click the “Install” button. Also in this section you can perform a system restore by clicking on the corresponding button in the lower left corner.

Step #3. Windows edition choice. Select the version for which you have an activation key. If there is no key, select proferssional - we will activate it later.

Step #4. We agree to the license terms. It may vary depending on the build, so it's worth reading. Then click “Next”.

Step #5. Installation type. We select a custom installation, specify all the parameters manually and format the disk. As a result, we get a clean system without any garbage.

Step #6. Disk partitioning. A window for selecting a partition for installation will appear. This is the most important step, so let’s look at it in more detail. Make sure you do it again backups important files.

Step No. 6.1 When installing on a new disk. Consider the case where you install Windows on new computer or a laptop with an unpartitioned hard drive.

1. Let's create a partition for installing the system. Size - at least 30 GB. To the question “ To ensure that all of its features work correctly, Windows may create additional partitions for system files » we answer "OK".

2. Let's create a partition for storing data. This will be the D: drive. During the next system reinstallation, all files on this disk will be preserved. Therefore, photos, movies and favorite music are stored on the D: drive, and not on the desktop :)

3. Select the partition to install the system (future drive C:), click next.

Step 6.2. When reinstalling. In case of reinstalling Windows, we simply format the partition of the old system and install the new one there. This will remove all files, including viruses. When asked if formatting will destroy all data, we answer “Ok”. We do not touch the “Reserved by the system” section.

Step #8. Entering the key. If it exists, enter it. If not, click the “Skip” button

Step #10. Network connection. The system will then prompt you to connect to wireless network. If it is available, we connect. To do this, click on the network name and enter its password. Otherwise, select the “connect later” option. In our case, this window did not appear because the computer was connected to the Internet via local network(via router).

Step #11. Setting parameters. In the next window, click on the “Customize” button and set everything as in this slide:

Step #12. Microsoft account. Select “Create a new account”.

Step #13. Select “Log in without account Microsoft." To log in to the system, you must create a local account.

Step #14. Entering your username and password. You can set the password later, just enter the username. Preferably in Latin.

  • Congratulations, Windows 8 is installed!

IN side menu You can go to the “Options” item and change some of the settings that were selected during installation. As you can see, the installation process is very simple and anyone can handle it. My final advice is to create a backup of the system as often as possible, so that in case of unexpected errors you can return it to working condition. All you have to do is activate the system, install drivers and necessary programs, with detailed instructions.

In fact, the method of reinstalling Windows on a laptop is not much different from reinstalling it on a desktop computer, but there are some points. There are two types of laptops:

    • With Windows pre-installed
    • Without her

In general, laptops are not sold without an OS, but often it can be the free Meego OS, which is installed instead of Windows to make the computer cheaper. After all, when purchasing, the price of the laptop includes the price copies of Windows, which raises the cost by 500-1000 rubles.

If you do not have a pre-installed licensed OS on your laptop in a hidden section, then use a universal one, which is also suitable for pirated copies.

But there are also advantages to pre-installed Windows - you can run system recovery to install a licensed OS from a hidden partition of your laptop’s hard drive. Owners of laptops without Microsoft OS are deprived of this opportunity. 3 options for how to restore Windows on a laptop:

    • For laptops with Win of almost all models, in the Start menu there is software from the manufacturer for system recovery. They are called differently, you can distinguish them by their name - something about Recovery. You will be offered several ways to restore the OS, as well as reinstalling Windows, and bringing the laptop to its original factory state.
    • On almost all laptop models, immediately when you turn it on, you can see something like “Press F2 for Recovery”. If you don’t see anything like that, then look carefully at the moment when the manufacturer’s logo appears on the screen. This will allow you to start restoring the operating system instead of loading Windows.
    • On laptops with Windows 8, you can go to “Computer Settings” - “General”, then find “Delete all data and reinstall Win”. The operating system will be reinstalled automatically, plus all necessary drivers and other pre-installed software that was included in the system at the time of purchase.

Starting a reinstallation from a recovery of licensed Windows on a laptop

If you did not reinstall Windows on a pirated copy, and did not remove hidden sections with HDD, then you can use the built-in function to return the laptop to its factory state, which is essentially reinstalling the OS.

To start Windows recovery you need to press special keys during boot (when the manufacturer’s logo is visible), look for an inscription like Press F2 for Recovery. Basically these will be the following keys depending on the manufacturer:

    • MSI - F3.
    • Samsung – F4, or run Samsung program Recovery Solution III from OS.
    • Fujitsu Siemens and Toshiba – F8.
    • ASUS - F9.
    • Sony VAIO and Packard Bell– F10.
    • HP Pavilion, LG and Lenovo ThinkPad – F11.
    • Acer - Alt+F10.

Restoring the laptop to its factory state

So, to reinstall Windows on a laptop using recovery, do the following. Let's consider performing an operation on an Acer laptop.

When the Acer logo appears, press Alt and F10. To avoid missing a moment, press them several times.

    • The recovery program window will appear on the screen. A password may be required, if you did not set one, then use the factory passwords: 000000, 00000000 or AIM1R8.

    • Select " Full recovery..." All data from drive C: will be deleted, save it from it in advance necessary information. If you need advice on how to do this correctly, then read the “Data Saving” section in our.

    • Next, you should read what you are informed and warned about.

    • Make sure the correct drive is selected.

    • Agree to begin the operation.

    • The process of restoring the OS on a laptop takes about 15-20 minutes.

This is several times less than the usual reinstallation of Windows on a laptop, especially considering the installation and settings of some utilities from the laptop manufacturer that come bundled with a pre-installed licensed OS.

    • The operation was completed successfully. Click “Ok, the computer will reboot and you will be logged into the reinstalled OS.

In another model of mobile PC (HP, Asus, Lenovo, Samsung, etc.), the program for restoring and reinstalling Windows may differ, but the essence is the same. You will receive a fully working laptop in the same software condition as when you purchased it.
