How to find out the Wi-Fi password using a router

Thanks to the router, you can easily find the Wi-Fi password, which we will talk about now.

  • We go to the router. In order to log into the router you need to know its IP address. Usually the standard IP looks like this - 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. If they don’t suit you, then you need to turn the router over and look at its IP address from below (Fig. 1).
  • Another way to find out the router's IP. Let's go to " Network Control Center and shared access “Click on the connection, in the window that pops up, you must select the “Details” button. We are looking for the line “ Default Gateway", this will be the IP address of the router (Fig. 2).
  • Didn't these methods help? Then you can look it up on the Internet on the manufacturer’s website.
  • The router must be connected to the computer network cable or you can use Wi-Fi. We register on network card IP and mask, for example (IP – 192.168.1.23, Mask 255.255.255.0)
  • Next, in any browser, enter the IP address of the router in the address bar. A menu will appear where you need to enter login and password. Typically, most routers have login and password of admin.

Hello dear readers! In this article we will figure out how to find out the Wi-Fi password. Nowadays, more and more devices that we use in everyday life have built-in means for accessing the Internet. To organize public access to global network smartphones, laptops, media players, TVs and other equipment, it is necessary to combine all devices into a single network.

Organizing such a network is quite difficult and requires certain knowledge, so many users trust this process to friends, acquaintances or specialists. It often happens that, after finishing work, specialists do not leave any configuration data, unless of course they are specifically asked about it. Some do not give this data because they want you to call him next time, or they may simply forget or consider it unnecessary. At the initial stage, there is no particular need to know this data - everything works as it is, the task is completed and no one wants to bother themselves with unnecessary details. But over time, new devices appear that would also be nice to connect to the network, and here the question arises - how to find out your Wi-Fi password.

Attention! If you call a specialist who sets up Wi-Fi, be sure to ask him for the password and write it down so you don’t forget.

I recently read somewhere that according to statistics, more than half of all users use wireless connection to the Internet, which implies the presence of a special device called a router. This is a device that identifies all devices on the network and their sharing on the Internet. One of the main signs by which a router allows “its” users to pass is the password. It is set for the entire network and is checked with every connection request. Therefore, if the password is not known, then in order to carry out any actions related to changing existing settings or registering new devices, it is necessary to recover it. You can, of course, call the person who set up Wi-Fi again, but this will require time and money. So we come to the very topic of the article;).

How to find out the Wi-Fi password from a computer

If there is at least one computer on which a connection to a wireless network is already configured and working, then finding out the Wi-Fi password is quite simple. The following will show how to do this for a device running Windows 7, for others operating systems the process will be almost exactly the same.

So, go to “Start”, click “Control Panel”. Next, select “Network and Sharing Center”, where information and settings for local network connections opens.

You can also get here more in a fast way. To do this, find the local or wireless network icon in the tray and right-click. A context menu of two items will appear; we need to select “Network and Sharing Center”. This method I think it’s much simpler because you don’t need to make unnecessary mouse movements.
Now on the left side of the screen click on “Manage wireless networks” (if this item is not there, read on):

Next, select the network whose password we want to know, call up the context menu by right-clicking and select “Properties”.

In the window that opens, go to the “Security” tab. To see the password, check the “Display entered characters” checkbox. You can get to these settings faster by left-clicking on the tray icon and right-clicking on the connection for which you need to find out the password. A context menu will appear, click “Properties”.

Now opposite the “Network security key” we see the Wi-Fi password. All that remains is to register it in the necessary devices and they will have access to the Internet.

If “Manage wireless networks” is missing, then you need to go to “Change adapter settings”.

Now find the wireless connection through which you connect to your router, right-click on it and select “Status”.

How to find out or change your wi-fi password on a router

If connected via Wi-Fi computers no, you can change the password in the router settings. Let's look at this process using an example Wi-Fi router Huawei HG530. To enter the control menu, in the browser line, type the address 192.168.1.1 (in other models this value may be different, if this does not work, then look at the instructions).

If you do not know the IP address of your router, then you can find it on a computer that has Internet access through this router. So, we have this computer, now we left-click on the network and click “Network and Sharing Center” (I showed another way to get into the network management settings).

On the left, click “Change adapter settings.”

Now you need to right-click on the connection that is used to access the Internet. In my case, I am currently using Wi-Fi, which means I need “Wireless network connection" IN context menu click “Status”.

In the window that opens, click “Information...”.

In this window you need to find the line “Default gateway IPv4”. Exactly, what is to the right is the IP address of the router that we need to log into. And by “DHCP – IPv4 server” you can find out whether the router distributes IP addresses automatically.

If you didn’t know, the router can distribute IP addresses automatically (DHCP), and if automatic distribution is disabled, then you need to register IP addresses, this method is called static. As I said above, my IP: 192.168.1.1.

If everything I said above did not help you, then there is another option. Pay attention on the back of your router, or rarely on the bottom, there may be a sticker on which the IP address is sometimes written. Sometimes I find that the router settings are located directly on the router itself.

I'm attaching a photo below so you can roughly understand where to look for this information.

Now open any browser and enter the IP address of your router in the address bar and press “Enter”.

A standard window will appear where you need to enter your username and password to enter the router menu. By default, as a rule, this is admin-admin (again, in case of difficulties, study the instructions, or pay attention to the sticker), these parameters are rarely changed. If the admin password does not work, you can try pass or password.

It happens that you can log in without a password at all, just enter admin and click “Login.” After correct input we find ourselves in the main menu:

In my router you need to click “Basic” - “Wireless Lan”.

As you can see from the screenshot above, my current password is “Abracadabra” (for example). In some routers you cannot view the existing password, but you can see the words “Password Viewer”, “Click here to display” or something similar next to the password. By clicking on the corresponding inscription, the Wi-Fi password appears. If the router does not have a password viewing function, then you can enter your password, that is, change it.

Of course, yours may be a little different. For example, you need to click on “Wireless” - “Security”. As you understand, even if there are some differences, you can still roughly understand where the settings for Wi-Fi are. If there are no inscriptions related to Wi-Fi, then we simply go through all sections.

A small warning: if you change the network name, you will have to reconnect all devices. If you just change the password, then network connections will remain the same, they just need to be replaced Old Password to a new one.

This is how you can easily and quickly, without turning to outside specialists, find out or change the password for your wireless Wi-Fi networks.

Also, to find out the Wi-Fi password, you can consider the option of calling the specialist who set up your router. But you need to be prepared for the answer that he forgot it and didn’t write it down in his notebook. Usually they answer that you need to come and look at the password, and if you even ask how to do it yourself, you most likely will not get a positive answer. This is a double-edged sword, he wants you to pay him money, because he needs to come to you, wasting his time, for which naturally you will need to pay.

This is where I end this article, see you soon!

For a visual example, watch the video on how to find out the password on D-link:

Almost every person has had a situation where they forgot their Wi-Fi password. There are several ways to restore access to a wireless network. Depending on the situation, actions may vary.

If you have forgotten your wi-fi password, first try to find a service agreement from your provider; very often you can find the login/password for connecting to a wireless network there. Also look at the back of the router, in most cases you will find a sticker with a password.

If you still cannot find the paper with the password or it is not written on the back of the router, you will have to spend a little time and effort to recover it.

If there is a device connected to Wi-Fi

If the router is used at home, it will usually automatically connect to the wireless network, and a password will be required if a new device is connected. In this case, to restore access you will need a computer that was previously connected to wi-fi.

First you need to go to your network settings. To do this, you can right-click on the network icon, which is located in the lower right corner of the taskbar and select “Network and Sharing Center” from the drop-down list. Or you can access these settings through the computer control panel.

In the window that opens, you need to click on the image of your network, a small window will appear. Next, find the “Wireless Network Properties” button and switch to the “Security” tab.

The Wi-Fi password is written in the “Network Security Key” field, but it is hidden behind the dots. To see it, you need to check the box next to “Display input icons”.

Using a router

If there is not a single device already connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi and it is impossible to see the password, you can try to restore it using the router’s control panel. To do this, connect it to your computer using a cable (it comes with the router), then you need to open any Internet browser and type the combination of numbers in the address bar: 192.168.1.1.

By the way, this works on all devices that can connect to wireless networks and have a browser installed, so you can open the router control panel not only on a PC, but also on a tablet or phone. It’s just more convenient to do this on a computer.

After you go to the router’s management page, the first thing you will need is a username and password to log in. Usually this is admin/admin, unless you have previously changed this data yourself.

Next, you need to go to the Wireless and Wireless Security tabs. This section contains the password for the wireless network. Most likely it will be displayed in the PSK Password line.

If you are unable to log in, look for instructions from your router. It will tell you exactly how to do this. Or look at the sticker on the bottom of the router. It may contain the address of the admin panel.

Special programs

There are many programs that scan the system and show all the passwords stored on the computer. Most likely, among them there will be a password for wi-fi.

For example, you can use WirelessKeyView, Dialupass, Remote Desktop PassView, RouterPassView, Wireless Password Recovery. They are very easy to use. Just download any utility and run it as administrator. If you download a program from unverified sources, do not forget to enable your antivirus.

The program displays a list of passwords in a text document and can be printed so that the information is not lost.

How to find out the password on an Android tablet

If you have forgotten your password and it is not saved on your computer, you can try to find it using your tablet. To do this you must have root rights. Next you will need the Root Browser program. It can be downloaded on Google Play.

After launching the program, you need to go to the root of the folder and open one by one data – misc – wifi. In the wifi folder, find the wpa_supplicant.conf file and open it using any text editor, such as notepad. This file stores information about wireless connections, including passwords.

This is the most drastic method, and it is better not to use it unless absolutely necessary and resort to it only if you are an advanced user and can restore all settings.

Each router has a “Reset” on the back panel. This button is prudently hidden from users. In order to restart the router and return it to factory settings, you need to press the button with a toothpick, knitting needle, paper clip or other thin object.

After resetting the settings, you need to go to the control panel of the router and re-set their values, including the password. Despite being forgetful, try to come up with complex password so that cunning neighbors cannot connect to your distribution. Avoid common and banal combinations such as 12345, qwerty, admin and the like.

In the future, in order not to look for the password, write it down on a piece of paper and stick it on the back of the router with tape. This will eliminate the need to tinker with the settings of your computer or router and will significantly save time. You can also save data to text file on a computer, but this is not very reliable, because you can accidentally erase information or the computer may break.

This method is the easiest and most convenient. First, you need to go to the Control Panel and open the “Network and Sharing Center”, then in the left sidebar you need to select “Manage Wireless Networks”. There you find the name of your Wi-Fi router, right-click on it and select “Properties”. In this window, you need to find the “Security” item and check the “Display entered characters” checkbox. That's all. The password can be seen in the line above.

If you do not find the “Wireless Network Control Center” item, then you need to click on “Connection” in the notification panel, after which a list of networks will open. If you didn’t succeed this way, for example, because you can’t check the box or the password is simply not displayed, then you need to try another method.

Option for advanced users

This method is more suitable for advanced computer users as it is a little more complicated. In order to remember your Wi-Fi password, you need to connect to the router interface. To do this, you need to connect it to your computer with a network cable. The cable comes with the router. Then open your browser and enter network in the address bar. Typically the address is either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. Then you need to enter your login and password in order to log into the system. The most commonly used login is admin and the password is admin. Sometimes the password can be 1234. If you are unable to log in, then you need to read the instructions for the router, everything is described in detail there.

When you have entered the interface, you need to find the section responsible for wifi security. It is usually called "Security" or "Wireless Security". The security item is located in the section related to Wi-Fi. At this point, you need to check the box labeled “Show network key” or “Unmask”. After this, the router will show you the key.

Password recovery using a special program

There is such free program WirelessKeyView. It does not require installation. It must be downloaded and opened as Administrator. The principle of its operation is that it shows all saved passwords in the system. Among these passwords will be the password for your router.

If none of the methods help, then you need to do full reset router settings. After that you can configure it again and select New Password. But keep in mind that after resetting the settings you will not only have to re-enter the password, but also the parameters for connecting to the Internet and the name of the network.

How to recover your Wi-Fi password? Any user who connected a router and set up a secure wireless network, but then forgot the security key, can encounter a similar problem.

We have collected several effective ways, tested on computers with different versions of Windows. The machines were already connected to the Wi-Fi network, but the task was to find the places in the system where information about the security key from the wireless connection was stored.

Attention! All methods, except searching in the router settings, work on computers (laptops, tablets, etc.) connected via a wireless network. If your computer is connected to the router via cable, proceed immediately to searching for the password in the router interface.

Built-in tools

The first step is to try to find password information in the system itself. They can be stored in different places depending on Windows versions, therefore, we will consider separately all possible ways to find the security key from a wireless network.

Windows XP

A text document opened through a standard notepad will appear on the screen. Here you need to find the “Network Key” line and change the information written in it - this is your password, which can be used to connect other devices to the wireless network.

Windows 7

Click on the wireless connection icon in the notification panel and select “Network and Sharing Center” (or find this section through “Control Panel”). In the menu on the left, find the “Manage wireless networks” link and follow it.

Find the name of your wireless connection and right-click on it. Select Properties.

Go to the "Security" tab. The password here is presented in encrypted form, but if you check the box next to “Display entered characters”, you will see the required characters in the line with the access code

In Windows 8, you can view your password in a similar way: you just need to find the wireless connection you are using, open its properties and on the “Security” tab, check the “Display entered characters” checkbox.

Special software

You can set up the Internet on Windows 7 and other versions of Microsoft OS not only through standard tools, but also using third-party software. For example, you can try downloading the WirelessKeyView program.

The program is distributed free of charge, so be sure to check it for viruses after downloading so that you don’t have to search later for how to remove goinf ru and other malicious applications.

When using this utility, the computer must already be connected to the access point for which you want to remember the password. In this case, when you launch the program, you will immediately see the required security key.

Using an Android Tablet

If you connect devices running on a wireless network Android based, then you can try to find password information in them.

You will need administrator access to the files, in other words, you must have root rights.

After obtaining the necessary rights, download from the Play Store Market application Root Browser. Launch the application and go to the root folder of the tablet and find the “data” directory.

Find the “misc” directory and go to the “wifi” folder in it. Open the “wpa_supplicant.conf” file using any text editor.

This file contains information about all wireless networks to which the tablet is connected, as well as passwords for them. If you do not want to open root access to your portable device, it is better to look at the password in the router settings.

Router settings

To get to the router’s web interface, you need to enter its address in the browser and specify the login/password, which by default is set to “admin/admin”.

A reasonable question arises: how to find out the router address? There are two main ways:

  • Look at the address on the sticker located on the router body.
  • Take advantage command line Windows.

If the first method does not help you, follow these steps:

After a moment, the wireless connection information will appear on the screen. You are interested in the “Main Gateway” parameter here - the router address is written in it.

The next step is to go to the web interface and find the password for the Wi-Fi network. Depending on your router model, the security key may be located in different places. In any case, you need to look for the “Wireless” section, and in it open the “Wireless Settings” subsection.

If you find the desired section in which security parameters are set (authentication mode, access code), then pay attention to the line called “Password” or “Key” - your password will be indicated in it.

No data available

Finally, let's consider the most difficult case, when the user has no way to find out forgotten password from Wi-Fi: there are no records on the computer, programs do not help, it is impossible to get into the router interface.

If you cannot access the router interface, you will have to resort to an extreme measure - resetting the router to its factory state. You should use this method only when all other methods have been tried and found to be unsuitable for your case, because after the reset you will have to reconfigure your Internet connection and wireless network.

To reset the router, find the “Reset” button on the back panel and hold it for 10-15 seconds (it’s better to check the instructions for the exact time).

Sometimes the “Reset” button is recessed deep into the case. To press it, use a thin paperclip or needle. After resetting the settings, you will be able to access the router interface using the standard admin/admin identification pair.
