If you are reading this article, then most likely your job is an office type. And all because the management saves money and considers it inappropriate to buy a separate printer for each working machine. System administrators or acquaintances with the honorary title “tyzhprogrammer”, set up a local network, with the help of which shared access to one MFP is realized. But one day a message may appear on the monitor with the text: “could not save printer settings error 0x000006d9,” as a side effect of excessive savings. Let's figure out how to get rid of this.

When does the error occur?

As a rule, this error occurs after a change in the software or hardware configuration of the equipment. It is associated with the Windows Firewall being turned off on the computer.

There are other reasons as well. Their essence lies in incorrect configuration local network or physical malfunction of network or computer equipment.

Troubleshooting

For the printer to work correctly (provided there are no problems with the network or equipment), you need to install the MFP with the firewall enabled. If necessary, after completing the necessary actions, it can be disabled.

Let's look at all the steps in detail:

  1. Click “Start” – “Settings” – “Network and Internet”.
  2. In the “Ethernet” tab, click “ Windows Firewall».
  3. In the window that appears, click on “Turn Windows Firewall on or off.”
  4. Select "Enable" as shown in the screenshot and click "OK".
  5. Next you need to enable printer sharing. To do this, go to “Settings” – “Devices” – “Printers and scanners”.
  6. Select the required device and go to “Management”.
  7. In the window that appears, click “Edit Properties”.
  8. In the “Access” tab, check the box next to “Share this printer” (my device does not have this option).
  9. Ready!

If all else fails

If the problem persists, try turning on network discovery and sharing files and printers.

To do this:

In today's article we will look at error 0x000006d9, which can appear whenever you try to share the printer you need. The full text of the error is as follows:

Usually, there are a couple of reasons responsible for the appearance of this error. Firstly, this problem may appear due to the Windows Firewall being deactivated on the system. Secondly, error 0x000006d9 could occur due to incorrect configuration of the local network for the printer, for example, such networks are often created in office environments where there are a whole bunch of workers per printer. However, error 0x000006d9 can also appear due to hardware failures of the printer itself or the computer’s network equipment.

How to fix error 0x000006d9 when setting up a printer

Error 0x000006d9 when setting up a printer often occurs due to the Windows Firewall being deactivated. Let's see how to use it with your printer - do the following:

  • open “Settings” of your computer;
  • go to the “Ethernet” tab and click on the “Windows Firewall” button;
  • click on the “Turn Windows Firewall on or off” link in the classic window;
  • check the boxes to enable a firewall for private and public networks;
  • open PC Settings again;
  • go to the “Devices” section;
  • go to the “Printers and Scanners” tab;
  • click on the printer connected to the system and click on the “Manage” button;
  • click on the “Printer Properties” link;
  • go to the “Access” tab in the new window;
  • check the box next to the “Share this printer” option;
  • close all open windows.

Try sharing the printer again - error 0x000006d9 has most likely been resolved. However, if it still appears to you, try sharing files and printers, and activating network discovery. To do this you need to do the following:

  • open your PC's Settings again;
  • go to the “Network and Internet” section;
  • go to the “Status” tab;
  • click on “Options” public access»;
  • check the boxes next to the “Enable network discovery” and “Enable file and folder sharing” options;
  • save the changes in the parameters and close all windows.

Once you've finished digging through the sharing settings, try sharing the printer again - error 0x000006d9 will probably be resolved. We hope that this material helped you overcome this problem with your equipment.

Quite often, when creating local networks, one printer is used for several PCs. But when trying to open access to it for other network users (share), the user may encounter the following error. Why does it occur and how to fix it?

Ways to solve the problem

Most often, this error occurs due to the Windows Firewall being disabled. To enable it, you need to follow the path: “Start”, “Control Panel”, “Windows Firewall”. Next there will be several options.

Method No. 1

If you have a third-party antivirus installed, rather than Microsoft, then you will have an “antivirus firewall” running instead of the standard one. In this case, the settings window will look like the following:

This means that first you need to deal with the firewall of the antivirus program you have installed (turn it off for a while or perhaps even remove it for a while). Only then will it be possible to share the printer.

Method No. 2

The second factor that can affect printer sharing is a disabled or incompletely working firewall. In this case, you just need to click the “Use recommended settings” button.

It is possible that you will get an error.

The reasons lie in the service that is responsible for the firewall functions. To check its status, press the key combination “Win + R” on the keyboard and in the “Run” window that appears, type the command “services.msc”.

A new window will open with a list of services. Find the Windows Firewall service. Please note that it is disabled. Because of this, it was not possible to perform any actions with the firewall.

Double-click on the service line. A new window with settings will open. If the "Startup Type" parameter is set to "Disabled", then select "Manual".

The service start button will become active. Click “Run”

The service is now running. You can return to the “Control Panel” in the “Windows Firewall” window.

As we can see, everything has changed here. Now, when trying to “share” the printer over the network, no errors occur. We put the appropriate checkboxes in the window on the access tab.

Check to see if the printer is online.

In this way, you can share access to other devices.

By the way, after you open access to the printer, the firewall service can be disabled. This will not in any way affect its availability to other PCs on the network.

Computer technologies have long become an indispensable part not only in offices, but also in residential buildings. It is difficult to imagine a workplace without a computer and related equipment, even at home. In this regard, almost 100% of documents are processed and created electronically. However, humanity has not yet abandoned printed versions of documents. But to print documents, you need a printer, but error 0x000006d9 when installing the printer very often prevents it from working.

Printer today

For about 10-15 years now, a printer has been as common an item as a personal computer. If previously they were installed in the amount of 1 copy for 2-3 offices and before printing the document you had to stand in line, today the situation has changed radically. There are only 2-3 CPs per printer. The situation is similar in families. Most people tend to have houses desktop computer and a work laptop. In this case, the printer also remains in a single copy.

But despite all the positive things described above, people still see the following message on their monitors: “could not save printer settings, error 0x000006d9.” This suggests that no matter how much people’s well-being improves and no matter how much technology develops, not many people really know how to use their computers correctly.

Reasons for the error

It's worth starting with the fact that this error only occurs on certain operating systems. Therefore the message: “Printer sharing error 0x000006d9” can be seen on operating system Windows 7 and Windows Silver R2 build 2008. But this does not mean that it will necessarily manifest itself in people working with these systems. For this, several more “conditions” are required.

One of the most mandatory is to have multiple devices connected to the printer. But in the modern world this is more the norm than the exception. They are connected to any office with a printer using a special wire or through a common server.

The last reason for such an error to appear is the negligence of the CP users themselves. Moreover, it was precisely the computer administrator user with whom the printer was installed. If the firewall is disabled on this computer, the error will constantly appear when receiving a request from another computer. And when the printer is connected to the local network, this error will appear on all server control points.

Solving the problem

In order for the printer to be available to all computers, and not just the computer administrator, it must be shared. Sharing is the process of connecting a printer to a local network. In other words, providing access to the device to all users. Naturally, if there is more than 1 CP, this is a very useful option, in which, for the reasons described above, the following message appears: “error 0x000006d9 when sharing the printer.”

The reasons for its appearance are described above, but how to fix this problem? Most try to reinstall the system, PC or printer drivers. But this will not bring results. Therefore, a frustrated user may end up contacting service center and spend your hard-earned money.

However, you can do without such radical measures and solve the problem in a few clicks. For a unique repair, you just need to turn on the firewall and the window will disappear. The program itself can be found in the following path: right-click on the My Computer icon, manage, in the services and application section you need to select services, then select the firewall itself and select automatic startup type.

The problem with the pop-up window will be solved automatically. However, some modern printers have many additional functions and accordingly a large driver package. At the same time, they are capricious to mistakes of any kind. So you need to be prepared to restore the drivers or reinstall them, but this happens very rarely.

From all this it follows that you should not always disable the Wibdows firewall since it protects the PC from network interference, which is the provision of a printer for the local network.

Enabling sharing of a printer is necessary when it will be used through multiple computer accounts. In most cases, this procedure is successful, but sometimes an error appears under number 0x000006D9. It indicates that the operation cannot be completed. Next, we will look at two methods for solving this problem.

When saving hardware settings, the print spooler service contacts Windows Defender. If it is disabled or for some reason did not work correctly, then the problem in question appears. There is one effective way to fix it, but the second one, which we will describe, is applicable only in a situation where the first one did not bring any results.

Method 1: Enable Windows Firewall

If the Windows Firewall is disabled or does not start automatically, the endpoint resolver, which is responsible for completing the sharing process, simply will not find available endpoints and will throw an error. Therefore, the right decision would be to launch a defender during the procedure. You will find detailed instructions on this topic in our other article at the link below.

Sometimes, after activation, the defender turns off immediately or after a while, so public access still does not open. Then you should disable antivirus program, which interrupts the firewall. Read about how to do this in the following material.

Method 2: Clean and restore the registry

When you share directories or a device for the first time, certain rules are saved in the registry. It is extremely rare that due to a large number of temporary files or failures, it is not possible to complete the necessary task with the printer. Therefore, if the first method does not bring any results, we recommend cleaning the registry.

After cleaning using one of the available methods, you should check for errors and then restore the components. You will find detailed guides on this topic in our other articles.
