To ensure safety home network You should password-protect your router after specifying the basic network settings. Changing the access key to the web interface will help protect your router settings from unauthorized entry. In addition to specifying a new password for the administrative panel, you should also select a complex access key for the WiFi network. If it is reliable enough, the attacker will not be able to get to the stage of changing the settings, even if he gains access to the wireless network.

Standard password change algorithm for any routers

First of all, you need to open your router's control panel. To do this, you need to know the IP address of the web interface, the standard login and password specified by the manufacturer. Typically, this data can be clarified on a sticker located on the bottom panel of the router. To enter the web interface, connect to the network, enter the desired IP address in the address bar of any browser and press “Enter” on the keyboard. In the dialog box that appears, enter the user name and standard key, then click the corresponding button in the interface.

After this, find the menu item responsible for the router’s system settings. In the factory firmware of most routers, this section is located at the bottom. Typically, you will need to enter your new device settings access code twice. In the first field you need to indicate New Password, and in the second - its confirmation. On some routers, it is also possible to change the administrator name. It is recommended to change the default login if your device supports this feature.

Pay attention! If the device was previously configured by another user, the standard data account may not fit. It is recommended to perform a factory reset to be able to log into the control panel. For this operation, a separate button on the back panel of the device is usually used.

Password protection on a TP-Link router

The administrative interface of most TP-Link routers is standardized, so logging in should not be difficult. Typically the IP address 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 is used, the login and access key are the same, their value is admin. Accurate data for specific model can be found on the sticker at the bottom of the device or on the TP-Link website. In the menu that opens, go to the “System tools -> Password” section or “System tools -> Password” in the Russian version of the interface. In this menu you can:

  • Password protect the router;
  • Change username.

Specify a new password and, if necessary, a new login to log into the router’s web interface. The number of characters in both parameters should not exceed 15. It is recommended to use letters in different cases (upper and lower), numbers and special characters. The only exception is the space character; its use is not allowed.

Important! On new versions software You can also use the universal address to enter the settings: tplinkwifi.net. The username and code do not change.

How to password protect an ASUS router

Launch any browser and type in the address bar the IP specified in the instructions (usually 192.168.1.1). Provide your username and password. If this information is unknown, check the instructions or one of the default login databases, such as Router Passwords. Open the link " Additional settings-> Administration", then go to the "System" tab. In the first table you can change the initial password set on the router. To apply the changes, restart your device.

Hello, comrade! Today we will talk and solve the problem of how to password protect a router. In fact, the password can be put in two places. From the admin panel (or from the Web interface) and from Wi-Fi. Few people are interested in the first option, so most likely you meant Wi-Fi. First of all, you need to connect to the router’s WiFi network.

Connection

You can connect to the network in two ways: via cable or Wi-Fi. In the first case, you need to connect a cable from a computer or laptop to one of the LAN ports of the router. They are usually yellow in color.

The second method involves simply connecting to the router’s wireless network from a phone, tablet, laptop or even TV. If you are setting it up for the first time, the default network name and password are on a piece of paper under the device. There will also be an address that needs to be entered into the address bar of the browser to go inside the Internet center.

The address can look like the one in the picture or be in the form of an IP address. The most commonly used addresses are 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.

After you go to the address, you should see the router interface, if you have not configured it before. Also, some devices have a default login and password; this should also be indicated on the label. But if the standard data does not fit, it means that someone has already set the login and password. In this case, to change this data, you need to reset the router to the factory configuration and configure it again. Our portal has all possible instructions for well-known models. Next, I will give an example of how to password protect Wi-Fi on different models.

D-Link

Be sure to also look at the type of encryption or network authentication, which should be WPA2-PSK. This is the most acceptable and reliable option. Also, as advice, I will say that you should not make purely digital passwords, which are very easy to hack. This especially applies to: dates of birth, numbers mobile phones. It was not uncommon for neighbors to hack into networks.

Classic firmware

There is nothing complicated on the old firmware. So just look at the picture below and do the same.

New firmware

Now set a password and save.

TP-Link

Unlike D-Link, the section will be called “Wireless Network”. It may also have an addition in the form of 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz - these are different networks.

On the new firmware, you will need to go to the second tab, and then select the wireless mode.

ASUS

Everything is simple here. The most important thing is not to forget to set the authentication method, as in the picture below, otherwise the password line will not be displayed.

On the old firmware, you first need to find the Wi-Fi section - it will have a ladder icon and is located at the very bottom. There will be a lot of items, put the name, protection and key. Also turn off WPS if you have it and save.

Help

If you have any difficulties during setup, you cannot log into the router, then you can safely write your questions in the comments under the article, and I will try to answer them. You can also write some advice to our readers and me.

Go to your router settings. It is best to use the CD that comes with the router, otherwise you can do the same thing remotely via the Internet. To access the router via a web browser, enter a special address in the input line. Standard addresses for routers: 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.2.1.

  • If possible, go to the router settings from a computer that is connected to it with a special Ethernet cable. If you connect to the network directly via Wi-Fi, then with any change the Internet will turn off, and you will have to log into the router again to configure it.
  • The default username and password on many routers is “admin”. Otherwise, try leaving one of the input fields blank and entering “admin” in the other. If this does not work, then refer to the instructions for your router, or contact the manufacturer.
  • If you have previously changed the password to access the router and cannot remember it, then press the Reset button on your router to return it to the factory settings. Please note that this action will delete all of your settings.

Find your network's security properties. The names differ on many routers, but basically this item is located in the “Wireless Network Settings” or “Security Settings”. If this setting can't be found, search for your router's name and look for where the security settings are located.

  • Select the encryption type. Most routers have several possible options network protection. Basically, these are: WEP, WPA-PSK (Personal), or WPA2-PSK. Choose WPA2 whenever possible because it is the strongest encryption type for wireless networks. This feature may not be available on some older router models.

    • Some older devices do not support WPA2 encryption. Keep this in mind if you have such devices and connect them to the network.
  • For WPA2-Personal, select AES type. If you have a choice, choose AES for WPA2 encryption. Another option is TKIP, however it is older and less reliable. Some routers only support the AES algorithm.

    • AES is a standard symmetric block cipher algorithm and is the best algorithm available.
  • Enter the SSID and passcode. The SSID is the name of the access point, and the passcode is the set of characters that you will need to enter to connect to your access point.

    • Your password must contain letters, numbers and symbols. The simpler your password, the easier it will be for ill-wishers to guess it, or to guess it using the “brute force” method, as programmers call it. There are password generators online that will help you choose a strong one for your network.
  • Save the settings and reboot the router. Click the “apply” or “save” button to save the new network security settings. Most routers will begin to reboot automatically and all devices connected to it will be disconnected from the network - they will have to re-enter the password.

    • If the router does not reboot automatically, you will have to do it manually. To do this, turn off the router, remove the plug from the socket and count to ten. Then reconnect the router to the network, turn it on and wait until it undergoes the initial boot (it will complete as soon as all the indicators start to light without change).
    • Don't forget to update your network connection on all your devices. For greater network security, change your password approximately every six months.
  • Wi-fi system wireless transmission content from the Internet to end devices, be it a computer, laptop or smartphone. It distributes the signal over approximately 20-60 meters, so your closest neighbor can use it. At the same time, your traffic will decrease several times, depending on how many devices will be “powered” by your router.

It's good if the password was set during the router setup. If not, you can enter it at any time. Let's take a closer look at how you can set or change your wifi password.

    Secure Password Requirements

It should be sophisticated enough to protect your connection from being hacked. Can be consumed english letters and numbers, auxiliary symbols (dashes, underscores). It is recommended to write at least 12-15 characters. All characters are entered without spaces. You can replace spaces with underscores (_). The same requirements apply to your computer password.

Some interfaces allow the use of uppercase (capital) letters, others accept only lowercase (small) letters. There is no need to use recognizable dates and names (birthdays, surnames, etc.) in the password; such passwords are calculated quite simply. A simple trick helps to accurately reproduce a password: first write down the sequence of letters and numbers on paper or in text editor, and then copy it into the input field.

Now let's try to complete our immediate task - set a password for Wi-Fi.

    Connecting to a computer

Setting a password means changing the router settings. To do this, the device must be connected to the computer. An Ethernet cable is used to connect your computer to the router.

On the back panel of the computer, connect it to a suitable connector (they are all different), on the router, as a rule, LAN 1. Plug the device into the network. Before connecting to the Internet, read the instructions for the device. Some manufacturers do not recommend setting it up with an active Internet connection. If nothing is said, connect the Internet cable to the connection socket. It is usually highlighted and labeled Internet or WAN.

    Opening Settings Pages

Access to the configuration interface is opened in the browser. In the address bar, enter the router's address and press Enter. Most often this http://192.168.0.1(enter without spaces, numbers separated by dots).

192.168.0.1 is the standard IP address local network, which is used in almost all routers in order to access " home page"router, on which you can set all the necessary settings, including the password.

If a device is assigned a different address, it can be found in the manual, on the device case, on the box, or from your provider.

    Login to the router panel

Here you will need a login and password to log in.

To do this, you need to know the login and password for entering the router’s configuration sheet. This is not the password that protects your Wi-Fi connection.

Usually they put the pair admin - admin in earlier versions. In modern ones, where the number of characters in the password must be at least eight, they traditionally write admin – password. Sometimes words are written with a capital letter. Let's say you're unlucky and the password is set differently, and not by you. You have a choice of two options:

    • Find out the password from the person who set up your device
    • Reset all settings to factory settings.

After logging in, you need to get to the Wi-fi password setting page.

The interfaces of routers of different brands differ from each other, so then you need to either read the instructions, or use our tips below if you own a router from one of the brands listed below.
