Hi all! If for some reason you have disabled automatic update in Windows 8.1 and, accordingly, the operating system is not updated, and you have a situation where you need to install a specific update ( for example, it is necessary for a game or for a program), but you don’t know how to do this, then this material will be useful to you, since in it I will tell you in detail how you can manually install the update on Windows 8.1.

So let's get started. I will install the update on the 64-bit operating system Windows 8.1, it is in my edition " Professional».

As an example, I will be installing the very important cumulative update set KB2919355 ( what kind of update is this you can read). Availability in the system this update is required for all future updates.

Where and how to download the update for Windows 8.1?

In order to download an update, you first need to know exactly what kind of update you need, i.e. for example, in our case it is KB2919355 for 64-bit Windows 8.1.

Download updates for operating system Windows is recommended only from the official Microsoft download center, so in order to find the update you need, go to the official Microsoft website - https://www.microsoft.com/ru-ru/.

Then simply enter the update number in the search bar on the website, preferably indicating the bit depth of the operating system; in our case, you could write “ KB2919355 X64" Further in the search results in the section “ Downloadable files» You will find a link to the download page.

Of course, you could also use the usual search engine on the Internet, but in this case there is a chance that you will end up on another site that will offer to download some incorrect update or there will simply be a lot of advertising.

This set of tools is designed to remove NOT RECOMMENDED updates (spyware and upgrade to 10) and replace them with STUBS in the Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems. Plugs are a kind of decoy for the Update Center. Unlike normal updates, they do not include their main content and contain only service files (cat and mum) and the necessary registry keys. After installing the stubs, the system will identify non-recommended updates as installed and will no longer offer them through the Update Center. However, you will be able to see stubs there and delete them in exactly the same ways as regular updates, but unlike them, the installation date will not be displayed for stubs (or the date will be indicated - 01/01/1601). In this regard, it is important to emphasize that installing plugs will be absolutely useless if real non-recommended updates have not been removed from the system first.

Two files from the set are intended to perform this task - the command file "Delete.cmd" and text file"~Delete.txt", which is necessary for this batch file to work. This file stores a list of updates (numeric only) that should be removed. You can open it, for example, using a standard notepad, and make any changes to this list. To remove non-recommended updates, you just need to run the batch file and wait until it finishes. At the end of the batch file, a pause will be made so that you can see the result; if you press any key after the pause, the system will reboot automatically. In case you just closed the command window, then you must reboot the system yourself (SYSTEM REBOOT is important condition to properly remove updates and install plugins).

Installation of plugs

To perform this task, there is a command file "Install.cmd", which uses a special folder structure. The correct names of these folders - the names of the updates for which stubs will be installed - are very important for the normal operation of this batch file. The folders themselves contain special files that correspond to these updates and serve as the basis for the formation of stubs. Not all updates that were removed in the first point are installed with stubs. For non-recommended updates that have been replaced by newer ones, stubs are not installed. This is not necessary, since they will not be offered through the update center anyway if you have installed stubs for the latest non-recommended updates. To install these stubs, you need to run the batch file and wait for it to complete. After this, it is also recommended to reboot the system.

Updating and modifying the list of stubs

To perform this task, the command file "Update.cmd" is intended, which uses the same special folder structure as in the second paragraph. Since new updates (including non-recommended ones) are released monthly, the lists of updates for this set of tools will also need to be updated periodically. Any user can do this, as it is quite easy. To do this, folders with the names of non-recommended updates that have been replaced with newer ones must be deleted, and folders with the names of these new updates must be added. And also add the names of these updates to the list in the file "~Delete.txt". Then run the file "Update.cmd", which will copy from the system the files necessary for generating stubs into the appropriate folders. Once everything is ready, all you have to do is complete the first and second steps again.

Important Note

Thus, to properly update and modify this set, you need to adhere to three simple rules.

  1. Digital designations of all non-recommended updates (both the latest and all superseded ones) that need to be deleted should be written to the file "~Delete.txt"
  2. The names (KB******) and number of folders must correspond to the names and number of those updates that must be replaced with stubs. There is no need to include the names of updates that have been replaced by newer ones.
  3. In order for "Update.cmd" to be able to copy from the system necessary files For new non-recommended updates, these updates must be installed on the system first. Since these updates will then be removed anyway, all this can be done on your production system. Or you can use a similar system for this, which is installed on a virtual machine.

In some cases, it may also be necessary to modify the finished kit, as described above.

  • If you want to add or remove any additional updates.
  • If you want to use this set for the Windows Embedded version of the system.
  • If the system interface language is not Russian or English or another additional language pack is installed.

Step-by-step instructions for installing plugs

  1. Run Delete.cmd and wait for it to delete them.
  2. Reboot.
  3. Run Delete.cmd again to make sure everything is deleted.
  4. Run Install.cmd
  5. Reboot
  6. Search for updates again

Step-by-step instructions for updating the set yourself

  1. Add a folder with the name of the update (KB******) to the "x86" or "x64" subfolders (depending on the bitness of your system).
  2. If a new update replaces some update from the set, then delete the folder with the name of this update.
  3. Add the name of the replaced update to the ~Delete.txt file (numeric designation only)
  4. Install a new update, for which a stub is made, into the system.
  5. Run Update.cmd and check that new folder the necessary files have been added.
  6. Now you can do step by step instructions for installing plugs.
  • If you just need to replace the plug for updating from old version for a new one, then it is enough to complete only the last three points.

Integrating stubs into a WIM image

This set of tools can also be used to integrate stubs into a WIM image. The integration algorithm looks like this:

  1. Mount the desired index from the WIM image into a folder (for example, into the E:\Mount folder).

    dism /mount-image /imagefile:E:\Path\MyImage.wim /index:1 /MountDir:E:\Mount

  2. Call the command file "Install.cmd" specifying as an argument (key) the folder where the image is mounted.

    call "E:\Stubs\Install.cmd" "E:\Mount"

  3. Disable image

    dism /unmount-wim /mountdir:E:\Mount /commit

From the very beginning, Microsoft took unprecedented steps to ensure that Windows 10 appeared on as many computers as possible. She made the new operating system completely free for users of legal copies of Windows 7 and 8.1. And it even left a loophole for owners of pirated versions: thanks to participation in the Windows Insider program, they can enjoy all the benefits of the latest system. But the most important argument for the upgrade is that Microsoft really did almost everything this time. Yes, you can find flaws and errors in any product, but in general, Windows 10 looks like a fairly fast, beautiful and convenient operating system.

Nevertheless, some users are in no hurry to switch to Windows 10. Some are prevented from doing so by conservative thinking, others have completely justified and serious reasons. For example, incompatibility of the software used or lack of support for some rare hardware component. These users will find it useful to know the full list of updates that need to be blocked in order to thwart Microsoft's attempts to upgrade your system. Here he is.

And then Update and recovery.

How to enable automatic updates in Windows 8.1

If automatic updates were not turned on when you first started your computer, you can change the settings at any time in Windows service Update.

Regardless of your settings, some updates are not installed automatically. This includes optional updates and updates that require you to accept new terms of use. When these updates are available, Windows Update will display a message indicating that they are ready to install.

To check for updates

  1. Run Windows program Update by quickly sliding your finger from the right edge to the center of the screen (if you are using a mouse, point to the bottom right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up) by clicking Settings → Change your computer settings and then click the button Update and recovery.
  2. Click Check now and then wait for Windows to search latest updates for your computer.
  3. If updates are found, click the button Install updates.

Read and accept the terms of the license agreement, and then click Finish if required.

Note Note: Some updates may require you to restart your computer to complete installation. Before starting, save and close all files and applications to avoid losing any data.

How much does automatic Windows update cost?

Windows Update is free. However, depending on how you charge your Internet connection, you may be charged based on traffic volume or the time it takes to download updates.

How to find out what updates have been installed

Windows Update stores update history so you can check which updates were installed and when they were installed. You can also remove selected updates from this list, but this should only be done for valid reasons.

To view update history

  1. Launch Windows Update by quickly sliding your finger from the right edge to the center of the screen (if you are using a mouse, point to the lower right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up) and click Settings → Change your computer settings and then click the button Update and recovery.
  2. Click View update history.

Do I need to restart my computer after updating?

The system will inform you on the login screen whether you need to restart your computer to complete the installation of updates: the option offers an immediate reboot and the option to postpone until later, up to 3 days.

If you are away from your computer for a long time, Windows system will automatically restart your computer to complete the installation of updates.
