Surely each of you, be it a novice system administrator or just a lover of IT technology, has thought about creating a flash drive with several operating systems. Everything you need will be at hand if suddenly one employee has Windows XP installed and another has Windows 7 or 8. Not so long ago I thought about this task and decided to make a multi-boot for myself USB flash drive.

Initially, I downloaded operating systems from the Internet from XP to Windows 10 and, of course, I did not forget about Hiren’s BootCD boot disk, this is in case I need to access the hard drive bypassing the broken OS.

For this task, I decided to use the YUMI mini utility, which can create a bootable USB disk with several operating systems.

What is required to create a multi-boot flash drive?

1. Download the mini utility YUMI
2. The hard drive must contain ISO images that will be written to the flash drive. For myself, I downloaded the following ISO images. Windows XP, Windows 7 (x64-x86), Hiren's BootCD, and Dr.Web LiveDisk.

Since the flash drive is only 16GB, I’ve settled on this for now, because the add-on will require additional software - Anti-Virus, archiver, graphic editor, and other software.

Let's complete the task.

1. Open the YUMI program

2. Select the disk on which the data will be written. In my case this is drive H: Multiboot

3. Select a distribution. If we copy to Windows flash drive 7,8, 10 then select the appropriate section.

If this is an ISO image of Hiren's BootCD, select another option from the proposed list

.

In my Windows case and Hiren's were already recorded on a flash card, so I decided to supplement it with a boot disk from Eset

4. You need to find the ISO image on your hard drive and select it

5. Click the “Create” button and wait until the program finishes transferring the data.

After one of the images is burned, we can continue to add other ISO images in a similar way. The main thing is not to check the "FORMAT" checkbox, otherwise all your efforts will be in vain.

How to add another image, for example Windows, to a flash drive?

After one of the images has been written to the USB drive, the YUMI program will ask for confirmation to continue working. Click the "YES" button.

From the ready-made Step 2 list, in the “Other Os/Tools” subsection, select Windows string Vista/7/8 Installer.

Find and select the Windows 7 image on your hard drive

Click the Create button.

Removing and viewing images installed on a flash drive.

To see what programs are already installed on the flash drive, just check the box next to the "View or Remove Installed Distro" option. Here you can also remove installed software.

Now on a USB flash drive or external hard drive there are many operating systems and ISO images you added. To multi- boot menu loaded after turning on the computer, and before loading Windows, do not forget to set the priority in the BIOS to boot from a flash drive.

If everything worked out, the YUMI boot menu should appear.

Each section contains various installation packages, for example in the "Antivirus Tools" section there will be a link to download LiveDisk, in the " Other Tools" Hiren's BootCd is located, and of course the "Grub Bootable ISOs" section contains links to operating systems: Windows XP, 7.8.

In the future, I want to create a flash drive with much more functionality, for example, add the operating system Windows 8 and 10, Linux (Ubuntu or Centos), a boot menu for Windows recovery from an image (Macrium Reflect or Acronis) as well as a wonderful DriverPack package that can automatically install all drivers for your computer hardware.

Please do not compare the article and video tutorial, as they were created at different times. In the video I showed how to do it bootable USB flash drive with 4 iso images.

Good afternoon. This rather interesting topic was suggested to me by one of the site’s readers. When he asked me a question about whether it was possible to create a bootable flash drive or disk, but so that there were several images for installation to choose from, I replied that I did not know, but I had heard about this in the Unix environment of similar systems. But I became interested and began to dig in this direction; it turns out that there are similar utilities for Windows systems. Although there are few of them, due to the fact that Microsoft does not like the computers on which their operating system is installed to also use another operating system (for example, Ubuntu). Although these technologies completely allow this. For example, you use Windows for games, and after restarting, you can calmly watch a movie and browse the Internet in the safety of Ubuntu.

Step by step instructions

Well, okay, our topic is a little different. In our case, we are looking at how to create a multiboot flash drive, which will have several operating systems for installation at once. And fortunately, there is nothing complicated here either.

  1. We visit the official website of the program Xboot- link . Download and unpack latest version. The program does not require installation, you just need to run it.
  2. The program interface is quite simple; in order to add images, you just need to drag the iso file of each image into the central part of the program window. When adding an image, a green window will appear asking how to perceive this image. If you are adding a Windows installation image, then select "Add using Grub4dos ISO image Emulation". If it’s a Unix system, then “Utility - Ubuntu”.

    In addition to images, you can also add various utilities (also in the form of images). For example, Dr.Web Live CD, Kaspersky Rescue Disk, which will help you check the system in case of a critical computer infection. In this case, you need to select the appropriate utility from the drop-down menu. If you do not have similar programs, fortunately for you the program knows a lot of links. To open them, just click on the File button and select Download. The familiar list of utility selections will open; when you select one, a transition button will appear to download the utility.

  3. After adding all the images, there are two ways - you can save everything as ISO file for further registration at DVD disc or immediately write to a USB drive (before starting, you need to format it, preferably to FAT32). To do this, there are two corresponding buttons in the lower right part of the window. If you click “Create ISO,” the program will ask for the path to save the image file and quite nicely display the process of creating it.

  4. If you click the “Create USB” button, a selection window will appear USB devices for recording and bootloader selection, the default is Syslinux, which is also recommended for work (it only supports FAT32), but if you have problems with it, you can try other Grub4dos (supports NTFS formatting). The only condition is that it won’t hurt to leave 5-10% free on the flash drive. Before clicking OK, carefully check whether you have selected the correct media so as not to delete important information from portable hard drive connected to a different port :) After clicking the OK button, the same process of creating an image will go as with creation of ISO image. The program will also offer to check the flash drive in its virtual machine.

That's all. I hope you found this article useful, click one of the buttons below to tell your friends about it. Also subscribe to site updates by entering your e-mail in the field on the right or subscribing to the group on VKontakte.

Description of the process of creating a bootable USB flash drive
Introduction. I think we all have several favorite CD/DVDs with operating systems, programs, utilities for restoring and checking OS and hardware, etc., which we constantly carry with us - just in case. But CD/DVD is a bulky and unreliable medium. If you're tired of carrying around a bunch of CDs/DVDs, I suggest recording it all on a flash drive. And why not make them a bootable USB flash drive with distribution kits of the necessary OS? This can be very useful when installing/reinstalling operating systems on netbooks that do not have optical drives. It can also speed up the installation process and make it much quieter and easier on a computer that has a drive. A little theory. Initially, the majority of flash drives do not have the ability to boot from it, and Computer BIOS doesn't even have that function. You won’t find it in the BootMenu, there are a lot there, usb-floppy, and usb-cd, and usb-hdd, but there is no pure flash drive. We need to trick the computer and present our flash drive as a supported device. Usually they take the boot area of a USB HDD as a basis, i.e. present the flash drive as bootable hard drive. How to do this? Let's use specialized utilities for this. So, let's use a simple and intuitive method that works on most flash drives.....
Warning: all data on the flash drive will be deleted, take care to save the necessary data from it on another medium!
Instructions. Part 1.
- Unpack the archive of this assembly onto your hard drive.
- Insert the flash drive.
- Open the “Tools” folder.
- Run HP USB Disk.EXE to format the flash drive (see Fig. 1).
- Using the BOOTICE program, install the bootloader (see Fig. 2, 3, 4).

After this procedure, a bootable USB flash drive will be created; now we need to place the files we need on it. Open the “Files_for_flash” folder, select all the files and copy them to the root of the flash drive. To check that everything was done correctly, you need to run the "Moba LiveUSB 0.2" program from the flash drive. This is a miniature virtual machine emulator designed specifically for testing bootable flash drives. After startup, a boot menu should appear with operating commands for launching programs. True, not all programs run under the emulator, but you can evaluate the performance of the menu. You can and should also check the flash drive during actual booting from it by rebooting the computer. Now the flash drive is ready for use as a recovery and test drive.

Differences from previous versions
- support for integration onto a WinXP OS flash drive has been discontinued;
- almost all programs and utilities for the flash drive have been updated;
- the method of integrating the OS onto a flash drive has been changed;
- The boot menu interface has been completely changed;
- now you can integrate as many OS images onto a flash drive as will fit on it, without combining them into one image in advance.

Additional material on flash drive
FiraDisk_integrator - a utility for integrating FiraDisk into OS images;
GFX-Boot Customizer - a program for creating your own boot menus;
Moba_LiveUSB_0.2, MobaLiveCD_v2.1 - virtual machine emulators for testing the boot menu;
WContig is a program for defragmenting files on a flash drive.

There are now more than a billion computers in the world. Each computer runs on a specific OS, be it a system Linux or system Windows. Many system administrators and advanced users are faced with replacing the OS with a large number of computers. Therefore, each system administrator has at hand several disks and bootable flash drives with different operating systems.

In this material we will try to simplify the life of a system administrator or an experienced user. We will describe the installation process multiple OS images on one bootable USB flash drive. That is, after reading the article you will be able to do bootable USB flash drive with different operating systems.

The first way to create a multiboot drive

For the first method we will need two utilities RMPrepUSB And Easy2Boot. You can find them on their official websites www.rmprepusb.com and www.easy2boot.com. Immediately after downloading, install the utility RMPrepUSB. To do this, run the installer.

Now click the main button Install, after which the program will install and immediately notify you about this in the final installation window.

Close the installer window and paste USB drive. Then launch the utility from a shortcut on the Desktop.

Before creating a bootable USB flash drive, we will need ISO system images for example. Window 7, Windows 10 And Windows XP. You can make them from licensed disks using utilities Alcohol 120% or CloneCD. If the iso images are ready, you can immediately begin directly preparing the multiboot drive. To do this, check all the radio buttons as shown in the figure and specify the path to the archive with Easy2Boot.

Having placed all the switches correctly, feel free to press the button Prepare disk. The process of writing the necessary data to the drive should begin.

Now let’s go to the USB drive in the “_ISO\WINDOWS” folder and write iso images of our systems to the appropriate folders:

  • Windows XP in "_ISO\WINDOWS\XP";
  • Window 10 in "_ISO\WINDOWS\WIN10";
  • Window 7 in "_ISO\WINDOWS\WIN7".

After the images are written to USB drive, you need to do the last operation by pressing the key combination Ctrl + F2. In a couple of minutes, your multiboot drive will be ready. You can check its performance in the built-in emulator RMPrepUSB. To launch it, press the F11 key. After pressing the button, the emulator will start loading with your drive and after a few minutes you will see the bootloader menu.

As you can see from the example, this method of creating a multiboot USB storage may seem a little complicated. But if you follow the instructions, then after just a few tests of this method it will be very simple for you, like any other. In addition, with its help you can make a boot menu with different pictures. For example, like in the picture below.

You can also find ready-made pictures on the website www.rmprepusb.com.

The second way to create a multiboot drive

For this method we need the utility WinSetupFromUSB. You can download it from the official website www.winsetupfromusb.com. The utility is distributed as a self-extracting archive. Therefore, you just need to download it and unpack it to a place convenient for you. If we compare this method with the previous example, this one will be much simpler and especially suitable for beginners. Before creating, also prepare two OS images of Window 7 and Ubuntu 14. Install the formatted flash drive into your computer and run the utility.

Now select the OS ISO images as shown in the image below.

At this point, all the settings for creating a bootable drive are ready and you can press the GO button, after which the recording of a multiboot USB drive will begin.

If you want the created multi-boot USB flash drive to boot into a virtual machine, then before pressing the GO button, check the “ Test in QEMU».

The example shows that any user can handle this application. But in WinSetupFromUSB There are also options for advanced users. To use them, check the box " Advanced options».

If you want to burn another similar operating system onto the media, for example, Windows 7, then do the same operation with the image Windows 7 in the considered example on the same flash drive. After completing these steps when booting from a drive, you will receive two versions of the system Windows 7.

An example of launching a multiboot flash drive in a laptop

For example, we will use the disk we just created using the utility WinSetupFromUSB and laptop Lenovo IdeaPad Z570. In order for our laptop to see the bootable USB flash drive, we need to boot from it. To do this, before booting the laptop, press the F11 key, which will launch the bootable media selection utility.

Select our media and press Enter. This will launch our drive menu.

For example, let's choose to install Ubuntu 14 and press Enter. The installation process will begin Ubuntu 14.

The seven installation process is similar Ubuntu 14.

As you can see, launching the media on a laptop is quite simple and even a novice user can handle it. The process of launching the drive on other laptops and desktop computers may be a little different. You can find out how to load the boot media selection menu in the manual that came with your laptop or motherboard.

Let's sum it up

In our material, we looked at the most popular utilities for creating multiboot drives. In addition to the two programs RMPrepUSB and WinSetupFromUSB, there are also such utilities as:

  • SARDU;
  • YUMI;
  • XBoot.

Each of these utilities has both pros and cons. These utilities are not as popular as RMPrepUSB and WinSetupFromUSB, so we did not include them in the review. If you have a desire, you can always familiarize yourself with them, since there are a lot of materials on the Internet with reviews of these programs. Another advantage of these utilities is the ability to install images boot antiviruses or program images backup. Therefore, using a multiboot flash drive, you can always scan your hard drive for viruses and make backups before installing the OS.

I would also like to note that we have described only part of the functionality. RMPrepUSB And WinSetupFromUSB. Therefore, if you want to gain advanced skills in the functionality of these utilities, we recommend visiting their official websites. Here you will find all the necessary manuals that will help you create a multiboot flash drive that meets your requirements.

We hope that this article has helped resolve any issues that have arisen.
