Modern smartphones surprise with their performance and capabilities. However, sometimes, in order to comfortably perform the necessary tasks, a time-tested model, which cannot be classified as a new product, is quite enough. This is precisely the gadget whose characteristics we will consider in more detail.

Equipment

The smartphone is packaged by the manufacturer in a cardboard box with virtually no information on it. Most likely, this is the expression of Lenovo’s minimalist style, emphasizing that this device is still the “younger brother” of the flagship Lenovo Vibe X smartphone at that time.

For most buyers, it may be important that in addition to the charger, USB cable and documents, the manufacturer took care of the presence of a wired headset in the starter kit. Although it looks simple and, frankly, cheap, the sound is quite pleasant and should appeal to most casual music lovers.

Appearance

The smartphone has a 4.7-inch display, but it looks quite large. This is due to the wide frames around the screen, which cannot definitely be called a minus, but some users may not like them. Despite its size, the gadget fits nicely in the hand and does not slip out of it.

The body is made entirely of plastic, matte in some places, and in some places with a metallized coating. The color of the body is light and pleasant, and with the right lighting it also creates a golden glitter effect. The device is assembled with high quality, there are no backlashes or creaks. Overall, the smartphone gives the impression of a well-designed model, albeit from a budget segment. Many Lenovo smartphones can boast of this feature, the prices of which remain within 7-8 thousand rubles.

The back cover is removable, underneath there are slots for SIM and memory cards. The Lenovo S650 has a removable battery, which has become a rarity in most smartphones lately.

According to some reviews, the wear resistance of the casing elements is quite high, and even with careless use, the gadget will not lose its attractive appearance soon. The display has protection against fingerprints that could appear during operation and interfere with the comfortable viewing of photos and videos.

Display

We touched on the topic of coverage a little, and now let's talk about the matrix. Perhaps we can safely call it weak side this device, since it has a low resolution for a modern device, namely 960x540 pixels. With such parameters with a diagonal of 4.7 inches, pixelation becomes noticeable even to the naked eye, which is why the picture gets an unpleasant torn “ladder” structure, and the Lenovo C650’s screen becomes more of a minus than a plus.

However, the rest of the display showed good results. Good color rendition, without emphasizing any particular color, fairly large viewing angles, sufficient brightness to use the device even in sunny weather - all this can partly compensate for the low resolution of the display.

The sensor has the ability to perceive up to 5 touches simultaneously, which is an ordinary indicator for state employees. But at the same time, there are absolutely no errors or sticking, so it can confidently be called good and of high quality.

"Iron" characteristics

The main processor is the SoC platform known from most budget models of 2014-2015. It is a single-chip chip containing a processor with four cores capable of operating at frequencies up to 1.3 GHz and a Mali-450MP2 video accelerator. The crystal is made using a 28-nanometer process technology, which ensures fairly low power consumption and low heating of the device when working with resource-intensive processes.

The processor works in conjunction with RAM volume 1 GB. This is not much by modern standards, but it is quite enough for comfortable work with two or three lightweight applications at the same time. In order to unload the RAM to the maximum, the system is optimized by the manufacturer, as a result of which about 500 MB is always available to the user, the rest of the volume is occupied by system applications. It is worth noting that in some Lenovo models with the same amount of RAM, a problem arises during operation, since only a fifth of the RAM remains available to the user. Here the Lenovo S650, whose characteristics often do not differ from problematic models, undoubtedly wins.

The Antutu benchmark test shows a result of 17,000 rating units, which is comparable to such flagships of past years as the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S3, although the characteristics of the Lenovo S650 seem less significant at first glance.

Smartphone communication capabilities

Nowadays, a smartphone without 4G support is sometimes considered too outdated, but we should not forget that the higher the communication standard, the greater the battery consumption. This model does not support 4G, but the mode of all 3G frequencies and standards, including HSUPA and HSDPA, is fully implemented.

SIM cards are of standard size and do not need to be cut or changed to start using the smartphone. When making calls, one of them traditionally becomes inactive, since the device is equipped with only one radio module.

In addition to the radio module cellular network, the Lenovo S650 phone is equipped with Bluetooth generation 4.0 modules, as well as Wi-Fi with support for b/g/n protocols. If necessary, a smartphone can be turned into a portable Wi-Fi router in several steps. Check with your operator in advance to see if there will be any additional charges for this, as some companies have recently adopted this practice.

A smartphone cannot do without a GPS module. The satellite signal level is quite reliable even in cloudy weather. When testing, in most cases it took about 1 minute, while the hot one took less than half a minute, or even a few seconds.

Memory

The internal non-volatile memory of the smartphone is not particularly pleasing with its size. It is a built-in flash drive with a capacity of 8 GB. Of this, about 3 GB are occupied system files. In total, a little less than 5 GB of disk space is available to the user out of the box.

To expand it, you can use microSD memory cards with a capacity of up to 32 GB, preferably class 10, in order to ensure maximum performance. According to reviews from users who tried to use larger memory cards, the smartphone simply refuses to see them, so when purchasing, you should rely on the limits stated by the manufacturer. However, when comparing prices for Lenovo smartphones, this model wins in terms of price/quality ratio, and it’s worth thinking about - perhaps this amount of memory will be quite enough.

Battery

The standard battery supplied with the smartphone has a rather ordinary capacity of 2000 mAh. This is a small indicator in the modern world of battery-demanding gadgets, but for its modest characteristics this battery is more than enough.

Supplied with the smartphone charger, capable of delivering power up to 1 A. With these indicators, it takes about 2 hours to fully charge the battery.

According to reviews, one charge is enough to actively use the smartphone all day, this is noted by users commenting on the Lenovo S650 4PDA topic. However, at the same time, you will have to connect it to power every night, which means that the resource of the battery charging/discharging cycles will be used up in about 2.5 years.

Main and front cameras

The Lenovo S650 4PDA smartphone was developed at a time when software image interpolation was not yet in fashion, so the stated resolution of the photographs corresponds to the resolution of the camera matrix. For the main camera it is 8 megapixels, but with the front camera the situation is sadder - its figure is only 0.3 megapixels, so you can forget about selfies. Considering the camera model, it is quite acceptable for its price segment.

The camera is quite decent for its level; in good lighting, the pictures are rich and clear. However, using automatic setup parameters when shooting, monitor the resulting result. Sometimes software makes a mistake with the choice of mode, as a result of which colors may be distorted, and highlights or, conversely, too dark areas appear in the photo.

Front camera can only be used for conversations using video messengers, but nothing more. You shouldn’t take pictures with it: they definitely can’t be called high-quality.

Smartphone setup

After removing the smartphone from the box, you should configure it. In this respect, this model is no different from other Android devices. It has a set of service applications from Google on board, so it is recommended to immediately get one account for comfortable smartphone use and data synchronization. Otherwise, setting up the Lenovo S650 is intuitive. The smartphone has hints regarding interface functions.

Conclusions

The smartphone turned out to be solid and pleasant to use. It is suitable for those for whom communication, rather than entertainment, comes first. The only downsides that can be noted are the overheating of the processor under very long, heavy loads that are not designed for this hardware, the low resolution of the display, and the version of Android that is already beginning to become outdated. If this is not important for you, you can safely buy this model - otherwise it will not let you down. In addition, if necessary, repairing the Lenovo C650 is quite cheap due to low prices for components, so an accidentally broken display will not be a tragedy.

Remembering the smartphones we met in 2013, we can safely say that it was marked by MediaTek chipsets. Thanks to MT6572 and MT6589, many manufacturers have created successful solutions with an excellent price/quality ratio. The Lenovo S650 smartphone appeared on our market at the end of 2013; it can be classified as a next-generation device, because it is built on the new MediaTek MT6582 platform. The model boasts not only updated hardware, but also new software. Let's get to know it better and find out what the innovations are.

Lenovo S650 comes in a cardboard box with manufacturer-specific design. In it you will find: a smartphone, a charger with an output current of 1 A, a USB cable, a simple in-ear headset, a functional stand case and a minimum of related documentation.

Design and ergonomics

The Lenovo S650 body is made entirely of plastic. The central part of the front panel is occupied by a screen with fairly wide frames, under which there are touch-sensitive keys “Menu”, “Home” and “Back”. Above it is the manufacturer’s logo, the front camera and the speaker grid, in the left corner of which a light indicator is hidden. Long press on "Menu" brings up a list of recent running applications, “Home” – launch Google Assistant Now. On the rounded sides there are two separate volume keys (on the right), a microphone hole with an interface connector (bottom), a power button and a mini-jack (on top). The listed elements are located on a thin glossy frame, expanding towards the bottom of the body and extending onto the back of the smartphone. Here you can see the main camera lens and LED cover. By removing the cover and taking out the battery, we get access to two slots for Mini-SIM cards and a memory card.

Plastic used different types– the sides and buttons are glossy and slightly slippery, the lid is more matte, with small perpendicular notches. In bright artificial lighting, pearlescent inclusions are visible, shimmering in the light. In addition to the black and silver version that was reviewed, the Lenovo S650 is available in white.

The assembly of the smartphone is at a good level. When pressed hard, the case does not creak, but it lacks rigidity - it gives in to slight bending, which is why the lower lid latches can come off. With dimensions of 138 x 8.8 x 69.8 mm, it weighs only 126 grams and feels lighter than you expect. The small thickness and rounded edges allow the Lenovo S650 to fit comfortably in the hand, but the ergonomics are spoiled by the physical buttons. They are thin, protrude slightly above the body, relatively tight, have a short stroke, and are also made of the same plastic as the sides. People with small palms will find it difficult to reach the power key, which is located in the center of the top edge, and the included case further reduces the ease of use of the volume keys. This could completely ruin the impression of the ergonomics of the smartphone, if not for small tricks. Firstly, in the settings you can activate the ability to turn on the screen using the volume keys, and secondly, you can lock the screen by vigorously shaking the smartphone in your hands.

The complete case provides not only protection, but also additional functionality. A base made of glossy mother-of-pearl plastic protects the ends and rises above the surface of the screen, preventing it from touching the table surface. The rubber insert at the back contains a metal plate, so it can be bent. In this position, the cover acts as a stand.

Screen

The Lenovo S650 IPS display has a diagonal of 4.7 inches with a resolution of 960 by 540 pixels. Its minimum brightness is 60 cd/m2, average – 249 cd/m2, maximum – 484 cd/m2. The minimum brightness is too high, it can be reduced by using third party applications, for example, Lux Lite. The maximum brightness level ensures good readability outdoors in sunny weather. Judging by the photographs of the display on the street, we can conclude that a non-OGS screen is used, although the air gap is extremely small.

Automatic brightness adjustment provides sufficiently high brightness under any lighting conditions. During normal use there are no complaints about the screen; it looks quite high quality. Vivid, rich colors, oleophobic coating, thanks to which the finger glides perfectly on the glass, and the screen itself practically does not collect fingerprints. The only disadvantage is that the resolution is not the highest by modern standards. In a smartphone from the end of 2013, with such a diagonal, you want to see a full HD screen. However, even with qHD resolution the picture does not look grainy.

Checking the factory calibration confirms the decent quality of the Lenovo S650 display

Interface

Lenovo S650 runs under operating system Android systems version 4.2.2. As in previous smartphones, the company uses its own graphical shell, which changes the appearance of the system beyond recognition. The Lenovo P780, S820, S920, which we reviewed earlier, had the second version of Lenovo Launcher installed, and the third version in the S650. By adding one to serial number version, the shell has acquired new functionality.

The key feature is that support for themes remains in place. In the Theme Center, you can choose from several preset themes that change the appearance of standard app icons, wallpaper, lock screen, startup animation, and the color scheme of some built-in apps. Each of these parameters can be configured separately, creating your own theme from “pieces”.

There are settings for changing the animation of scrolling through desktops, enabling cyclic scrolling, and the ability to backup settings. Gesture support has also appeared. They are less “advanced” than third-party launchers like Nova, allowing you to bring up the notification panel or the list of recent applications in one motion.

As before, the settings menu is divided into three tabs.

But these are all minor things. The main change is that the shell has abandoned the usual application menu. Now all installed programs immediately go to desktops, of which there can be up to 18, and they can be sorted by folders.

The notification shade contains a row of ten scrollable shortcuts for quick change parameters, the second tab contains 15 such switches. Their order can be changed at your own discretion. Simply clicking on them changes the state or switches mode, holding them takes you to the corresponding settings menu. You can activate the collapse of the panel after clicking the switch.

Some of the functionality is familiar from solutions from other manufacturers. This concerns the design of folders, the animation of their opening and the appearance of the menu for recent applications - they repeat the decisions of the MIUI firmware. In the menu of recently launched applications, you can clear the RAM by closing running programs. By pulling the application icon down, a “lock” will appear in its left corner - this means that it will work even after clearing the RAM; by sliding the icon up you will close the application.

Interaction with the shell occurs as follows. To create a folder, you need to drag the icon of one application onto another. By going into a folder, you can “pull” a shortcut from it; the folder will exist as long as there is at least one program in it. Pinch to the center brings up a menu with desktop windows. Here you can change their number, change their places and assign the main screen. By swiping up from the bottom of the screen, a list of widgets appears, from where they can be placed on the desired desktop.

In general, the new Lenovo shell has become more functional, while the number possible settings decreased. She looks more beautiful and complete. Although many of the “chips” are familiar from other shells and third-party firmware, it can be argued that the best solutions have been copied.

It is worth noting that initially the smartphone contains a large number of pre-installed Yandex applications, clients for accessing social networks. Some of them duplicate functionality Google programs. Fortunately, most of them can be removed. There are also Lenovo applications: SHAREit - for sharing various content with friends, SECUREit antivirus, SYNCit - for creating cloud backup copies contacts, programs.

Calls and multimedia

Support for two SIM cards is implemented on the basis of one radio module - during a conversation on one card, the second one is disabled. The settings provide the ability to set separate ringtones and notification tones for them, as well as default parameters - which one is preferable to send SMS, make calls, transfer data. In most of these smartphones, when you open the Messages and Calls application, a switch appears in the status bar that allows you to quickly change the selected SIM card before performing an action. In the case of Lenovo S650, the notification is also present, but it takes you to the corresponding settings item. Therefore, if you use both cards equally often, it is better to select in the settings the “Always ask” item from which card to make a call or send messages - in this case, the corresponding applications will have two keys for calling and sending SMS.

The hardware responsible for voice communications is poorly implemented. The ringing speaker is moderately loud, but its sound is absolutely flat, the vibration alert is weak and easy to miss. The quality of the microphone and speaker is at an average level. During testing, there were several complaints about poor hearing when talking in a noisy environment. The volume of the speaker is enough for a conversation in a quiet environment; if it is noisy around, then the interlocutor is practically inaudible.

Multimedia capabilities are implemented at the proper level. The smartphone plays Full HD video at 60 frames/s, but the built-in player has not yet learned to play audio tracks AC3. The quality of music playback is at a good level. The absence of noise, high volume and overall pleasant sound will not disappoint music lovers.

Performance and memory

Lenovo S650 is based on MediaTek MT6582 SoC. Like previous solutions, it is manufactured using a 28 nm process technology, includes four Cortex-A7 cores operating at 1.3 GHz and a dual-core Mali-400 MP2 GPU. The amount of RAM is 1 GB, built-in memory is 8 GB (5.62 GB available), there is a slot for memory cards.

There are no performance issues. Flipping through desktops and animations are smooth, applications launch quickly. Heavy games are running, for example, Real Racing 3 sets the maximum graphics settings, the frame rate is enough for a comfortable game. The only nitpick is the amount of RAM. With a small set installed programs After loading the smartphone, approximately 400 MB are free; while working with several applications, about 150 MB remain free. Obviously, a custom shell requires slightly more resources than a standard shell. When working with heavy applications, it is sometimes unloaded from memory. It turns out that 1 GB is just enough, and an extra 500 MB would definitely not hurt.

GPS and Wi-Fi work without any complaints. A “cold start” takes less than a minute, the subsequent search for satellites is much faster. The speed of data exchange via Wi-Fi is maximum.

Camera

The smartphone has two cameras: a front one with a resolution of 0.3 megapixels and a main one with 8 megapixels with autofocus. The front camera does not shine with picture quality and will provide an image acceptable for communicating on Skype; you should not expect anything more from it. The main one demonstrates consistently good photo and video quality, both when shooting indoors and when shooting outdoors. The pictures are obtained with natural color reproduction and relatively detailed. In normal mode, the camera shoots at an average speed, but creating HDR photos will require 3-4 seconds of waiting and a static scene, since moving objects are blurred.

Example of photos taken with a Lenovo S650 smartphone

Example of Full HD video shot with a Lenovo S650 smartphone

The camera app is a heavily simplified "Super Camera" like we saw on the Lenovo P780. The general interface is similar, but once you go into the settings, you will see the standard for most Chinese smartphones menu.

Autonomy

Lenovo S650 is powered by a removable battery with a capacity of 2000 mAh. In standby mode, the smartphone discharges slightly, like most other models based on MediaTek chipsets. But as soon as you turn on the screen and start doing something, the charge begins to melt before your eyes. In the mode of use typical for the author, with all communication modules turned on, with a small number of calls, reading Twitter feeds and articles throughout the day, synchronizing one Google account, and listening to music for an hour or two, the charge is enough for a day of work - taken at 8 am After charging, the smartphone will show about 20% charge by night and ask to be plugged in. Already, many smartphones of different price categories are able to survive in this mode for two days.

You can improve the overall picture a little by using the Power Manager application. In it you can create power profiles, configure the operation of all communication modules, the display, the background operation of applications, etc. By independently adjusting the energy consumption and sacrificing the full operation of the smartphone, you can “squeeze out” two days of work, but it is better to count on a day of work, and if you actively use various functions, you will need charging before you get home.

Results

Lenovo S650 can be called one of the most controversial smartphones from the company that we have come across recently. On the one hand, it has a relatively unique design and its own face, but you can’t feel the “thing” in your hand. The poor placement of the power key mitigates the possibility of locking the screen by shaking the smartphone and turning it on with the volume buttons. A high-quality bright screen comes with mediocre battery life and a quiet speaker. A beautiful and functional shell can make you fall in love with this smartphone, but what to do with the other shortcomings? Roughly speaking, for every big “plus” you can find several minuses here. In such a situation, the price of the smartphone plays an important role. At the time of writing this review, large online stores are selling the model for 2,499 hryvnia, and many small ones are asking for it from 1,800 hryvnia with a “store guarantee,” which is a typical picture for Lenovo smartphones. Where and under what conditions to buy the S650 is a personal matter for everyone, but do not forget that there are solutions from other brands that will certainly allow you to get a less controversial experience.

The Lenovo s650 smartphone does not act as a “poor” version of an Android device. This is a completely advanced device designed for convenient use. Buyers are invited to evaluate not only the attractive appearance and good performance, but also find something more interesting in it. Although, the model also has certain disadvantages. What are the main features of a smartphone presented by a world-famous manufacturer?

External data

The phone body is made entirely of plastic. In the center of the front panel there is a display that has fairly wide frames with touch buttons located under it. At the top, as usual, is the company logo, front camera module and earpiece.

The side faces house two separate buttons, the task of which is to adjust the volume. There is also a microphone hole and a power button.

The main camera is easy to spot on the back panel. Removing the cover gives access to the battery and two SIM card slots. The phone's build is good. If you squeeze the device, its body does not emit squeaks or other extraneous sounds. True, there is a little lack of rigidity, as a result of which the latches located at the bottom sometimes come off. It is impossible not to note one more important feature. Rear panel The smartphone is laser processed, so it is pleasant to the touch and creates comfort when using the device. Moreover, it is also additional protection from fingerprints and scratches, which preserves the attractive appearance of the device.

Equipment

The box in which the Lenovo s650 smartphone is supplied contains the device itself, battery, charger, microUSB cable, documentation and headphones. Quite like that standard set, but it is worth noting that some Lenovo models cannot boast of such equipment.

RAM 1 GB
Internal memory 8 GB
Memory expansion 32 GB
Display 4.7 inches
Wireless technologies Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0

SIM card Dual SIM supported

Camera

The main camera module of the Lenovo s650 phone is 8 megapixels, it is equipped with autofocus. It is quite enough for creating high-quality photographs. Using the main camera, you can shoot outdoors or indoors. The photos come out acceptable, the color rendition is good. But to create HDR images, you will have to wait a few seconds, otherwise the objects will turn out blurry. The front camera has only 0.3 megapixels, from which it is easy to conclude that it does not shine with image quality. But it is capable of providing a decent picture when making calls via Skype.

Display

The 4.7-inch screen can provide acceptable readability in bright sunny weather at maximum brightness. If necessary, its level can be reduced. The air gap is small, as evidenced by photographs taken when shooting outdoors. In general, the display is quite standard and does not stand out in any way from many other models presented by Lenovo.

There are no problems in terms of performance. Flipping through desktops and animations is quick and smooth. Applications launch quickly, without delays. It is possible to even run some heavy games. The disadvantage is the amount of memory. If you install everything necessary programs, the user will have approximately 400 MB left, and if you work with several applications simultaneously, even less - only 150 MB. Thus, the amount of memory provided is “back to back”. If the manufacturer had provided an additional 500 MB, they would definitely not be superfluous.

Autonomous operation

The Lenovo s650 smartphone is equipped with a removable 200 mAh battery. If the phone is in standby mode, its charge decreases slowly, similar to other modifications created on MediaTek chipsets. However, when you turn on the screen, as well as manipulate the device, the charge literally melts before your eyes. If you use the phone in normal user mode, which is suitable for a modern person, the device will last only one day. Even if in the morning the smartphone is just removed from the socket with a full charge, literally by the evening it will ask to be returned. This is a serious disadvantage, especially considering that most modern devices They can already hold out for two days in a similar regime.

What is the conclusion from all of the above? The Lenovo s650 phone is one of the most controversial models. If we consider its features on the one hand, it has a unique design. Despite this, the real “thing” is not felt in the hand. Of course, the placement of the buttons is poor, but this unpleasant moment is smoothed out by the ability to lock the screen by simply shaking the phone. A high-quality screen is an advantage, but the overall impression is marred by a very mediocre autonomous operation and a low-volume speaker designed for conversation.

Of course, an attractive appearance can make you fall in love at first sight, but it’s hard to argue with other shortcomings. In general, every advantage is countered by several disadvantages, and quite significant ones. The cost of the phone also plays a big role. It's pretty decent, despite the shortcomings of the device. Is it worth purchasing this model? No one will answer this question, since buying a smartphone is a personal matter for everyone.

Characteristics

Powered by an MTK6582 Quad Core processor with a frequency of 1.3GHz, coupled with 1GB RAM, the Lenovo S650 smartphone is capable of solving quite complex tasks assigned to it. The phone has 8 GB of built-in memory, but if this seems not enough for some, there is support for microSD memory cards with a capacity of up to 32 GB.

The phone supports simultaneous operation of two SIM cards of WCDMA and GSM standards. There are Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS modules. The 2000 mAh battery can last for one day of active work or 2-3 days in a more relaxed mode.

The dimensions of the device are 138 x 69.8 x 8.7mm. The weight of the phone is 130g. In the Antutu Benchmark program, the smartphone scored a well-deserved 17148 points.

Screen and sound

The Lenovo S650 has a 4.7-inch screen with an IPS matrix that has a bright, contrasting picture and wide viewing angles. The display resolution is 960 x 540 pixels, which is not the best result, but it is quite suitable for watching videos, surfing and playing games. There are no complaints about the color reproduction of the screen - everything is perfect. The sound in the smartphone is quite loud and of high quality.

Camera

The phone has two cameras of 0.3 MP and 8 MP with flash. Examples of video from the camera can be seen below.

The video recording quality leaves much to be desired.

The thin body and shiny inserts (like metal) give the phone elegance.

The front panel of the device contains light and proximity sensors, a speaker grille, the Lenovo logo, a 4.7-inch screen and three touch navigation buttons. On the back cover there is a camera with flash, the Lenovo logo and a speaker grille. The panel itself is made of textured plastic, pleasant to the touch.

On the right side there is a volume rocker, and on the left there are no additional elements. On the bottom of the device there is a microUSB input.

On the top there is a power button for the device and a 3.5 mm headphone input.

The Lenovo S650 smartphone turned out to be quite interesting and, thanks to its not overly huge size and decent performance, is able to occupy its niche among phones of this class. However, the manufacturer should think about strengthening the batteries not only in the “P” series, but also in all other devices in its model range.
