Greetings, comrades!
For 8 years I used the legendary D-link DIR-300. The old man served me and my loved ones well. But sooner or later, it’s time for outdated equipment to retire so that they no longer irritate their native people with a small signal coverage radius, low speed and constant failures. In return, he snatched another router, a Chinese one, at a discount.

I've been waiting for the router for a little over a month. I was about to start eating the junk food. And when he saw the latest track update status, he quickly ran to the post office to pick up the parcel.
The characteristics are as follows (taken from another site):

The packaging was put into a postal bag without a protective bubble.

On the back of the package there is a picture of how to configure the router

Instructions where it’s immediately clear...

Additional information

... that nothing is clear)))

Here is the router itself. Small! Lightweight

Offhand, it is approximately the size of a passport-type HDD drive. The inscriptions SYS, WLAN, 1,2,3,WAN are embossed on the front edge

The sticker only says the address 192.168.0.1 to get into the router settings through the browser. There is no login or password here.
To operate the router there is a 9V 0.6A unit, which is included in the kit

Power supply with Chinese plug. Ay-ay-ay. Where is the adapter for the European socket? I don't have it.

The antennas are larger in size than the old dir-300, which has only one antenna. And the mount is tighter

Ports for connecting a power supply, Ethernet cable, 3 for a computer. Reset button.

Compared to the old man, Tenda is thinner and smaller

I tried to disassemble the router and show the guts for everyone to see. After all, the halves of the case are held on by latches and it was scary to break them. A plastic card helped me in this very difficult matter. It began to snap off from the port side. Here it seems that the memory chip can be replaced and more functional firmware can be rolled out. Anyone in the know, tell us about the improvement, is the game worth the candle?

Connection
1. Connect the Internet cable to the WAN socket
2. Plug one end of the LAN cable into the connector marked 1, the other end into the LAN connector on the computer
3. A mini-computer icon will appear in the tray on your computer, hover your mouse over it, right-click and select Network and Sharing Center

4. Select change adapter settings

5. Hover the mouse over the icon where the unidentified network is and press the right mouse button. Select properties

6. Double click on TCP/IPv4 protocol. In the window that opens, check the boxes for obtaining an IP address automatically

Settings
The Chinese firmware scared me at first and was perplexed that everyone in the reviews was talking about easy setup. They left a link there for the English firmware, but it wasn’t there, the link ran out. I spent 5 minutes and finally found this firmware in another place, but it refused to be installed. At first the strip seems to reach the end, it reboots and again there is this Chinese firmware. “Ugh,” I said, and with Google Translate I tried to overcome the dense and mighty Chinese language in the standard firmware. The firmware version, for those interested, is 12.01.01.27_СN, it hasn’t been Googled yet, so it’s fresh.

My provider is PPPOE. IP static. Speed 100Mbps.
I enter the address to log into the router through the browser 192.168.0.1
Setting procedure:
1. Point at the point where you drew 1
2. Place a dot where it is drawn 2. Enter the login and password from the agreement
3. Save using the orange button below

4. Place a dot where the circle is with 4. This is a static IP. Enter the remaining settings from the contract

Wi-Fi setup

Whatever! The main window will look like this:

The next item displays all gadgets connected to Wi-Fi

This seems to set the operating modes of the router.

I didn’t understand the rest of the points, but I’ll throw it here just in case.

Speeds
The cable speed is almost full. On wi-fi it’s already less. I don’t know if this is a limitation of my smart phone or the router itself slows down the speed... But the fact that the coverage area has increased made me happy. My phone can pick up Wi-Fi even at the opposite end of the high-rise building where I live.

Results
The old man d-link DIR300 has safely retired, giving up its dusty place to the young and strong N300. Coverage Wi-Fi networks pleased! Fishing is good on the street. Of course, as you move to the opposite side of the house, the signal becomes weaker. The speed has become higher compared to the DIR300 and the connection is more stable, there have been no dumps yet. I didn't expect this from the baby. There are also complaints if you look for it)) This is Chinese firmware. I even wrote to the developers asking them to send me at least an English-language version. The figurines have been silent for a whole month already. No answer, no hello. I don’t understand the speed over wifi, it’s significantly higher than in the DIR300, but it’s not a full 100 Mbit... is it a limitation of my smart device or is the router cutting it that way?
There is no support for L2TP and PPTP, but I don’t need them, but keep in mind if you do not have a PPPOE provider. Overall, more than satisfied for the money!

I'm planning to buy +12 Add to favorites I liked the review +20 +39

Good day.

Not long ago I helped one of my friends create home Wi-Fi net. Well, since he acquired a fairly new model of the Tenda router (namely FH456), I decided to write this article.

In general, I must admit that I did not expect such a good set of functions, and in general, high-quality work from a router that costs $15 (and if you run into a promotion, it’s even cheaper!).

Looking ahead, I’ll say that the router covered the entire apartment with a stable Wi-Fi network: I specifically started downloading a popular file on my laptop (at the same time I opened the browser and pressed F5 to refresh the pages) and walked with it through all the rooms - even behind two walls the reception is excellent, the speed does not drop or break!

So, let's start in order...

Addition! I have another instruction on my blog for connecting and setting up a router yourself:

Setting up the Tenda FH456 router

Similar models: N301, F3 (also customizable)

Why Tenda FH456 is worth paying attention to, advantages. Where to buy.

  1. main plus: good and high-quality coverage of the entire apartment or house (the router has 4 antennas, each 5 dBi);
  2. Fully high-quality translation into Russian of the device’s firmware (even a novice PC user can figure out the settings);
  3. the ability to adjust the wireless network signal, there are three modes: low, medium, high;
  4. the device can work both as a router and as a repeater;
  5. quite a good processor (chipset from Realtek);
  6. the ability to control traffic: for example, you can limit the bandwidth of certain connected users (for example, your brother/matchmaker/someone else is taking up your entire Internet channel - set a download limit for him, say, 4000 KB/s);
  7. there are functions for parental control and setting work schedules (you can turn off Wi-Fi at night);
  8. the rest of the characteristics are quite standard, I think there is no point in listing them here...

And for all these functions you will have to pay about $15 (sold on AliExpress and a number of others). I haven’t seen such a model yet in our regular stores...

What's included in the package

Router box / appearance

The delivery of the router is quite standard: the device itself is included in the package, network cable(I didn’t need it for setup, because the device can be configured immediately via a Wi-Fi connection), power supply. Naturally, the kit included documents and a certificate in Russian - but, to be honest, all this was not useful either...

Connecting the router and dealing with the “wires”

The router connection itself is standard. The cable coming from the Internet provider must be connected to the WAN socket, and the network cable from the PC must be plugged into one of the three LAN ports. Well, to turn on the device, connect it to the power supply.

Note!

What Tenda pleasantly surprised me with was the lack of need to connect a PC to configure the router. Those. if you do not plan to use a PC, then all router setup can only be done via a Wi-Fi network. Comfortable!

If everything is in order with the device, the LEDs on it should start to light up and blink (as in the photo below).

  1. firstly, this is the address for setting up the router: 192.168.0.1;
  2. secondly, the name of the Wi-Fi network that the router will create by default when you first connect it (it may be different from mine, so check the sticker on the case of your device!).

Settings and wifi security networks

As I said above, ALL setup can be done over Wi-Fi. After the router starts working, it creates a Wi-Fi network that is not password protected (open to everyone!). Therefore, the first thing I recommend doing is connecting to it and changing the access password.

Connecting to the network is very simple - just click on the network icon in the tray (next to the clock) and select the name of the network that is indicated on the sticker on the device (the network will be open!).

Connection to open network/ Tenda router was launched for the first time

The browser should immediately open the router settings (address: http://192.168.0.1/index.html ).

  1. wireless network name (can be anything);
  2. security mode: the most relevant now is WPA2-PSK;
  3. and the password can be anything (I recommend at least 6 characters).
  4. Next, save the settings. The router should reboot, and you will need to reconnect to the newly renamed Wi-Fi network...

Setting up Internet access

As I said above, you will need to reconnect on your laptop (for example) to the newly renamed Wi-Fi network. By the way, please note that in most cases the Wi-Fi icon will still have a yellow exclamation point (that is, the network will not have access to the Internet).

Then open the "Internet Settings" section. Here it is already difficult to give specific recommendations - because... Depending on the provider, everyone’s network is built according to different standards.

Important!

Data for connecting to the Internet must be specified in your agreement with your Internet service provider.

It is worth noting that Tenda supports almost all options that are found in our country: PPPoE, PPPoE (Russia), Static IP address, Dynamic IP address, PPTP, L2TP (also optimized for Russia).

In general, if, for example, we take PPPoE (Russia), as the most popular option, then you will only need to provide a login and password for access (this data can be found in the agreement with the Internet provider). All you have to do is enter them and save the settings. If the data is correct, then the router will connect and you will have access to the Internet.

Whether the Internet has appeared, and in general how actively it is used, you can find out in the “Status” section - here you will see at what speed the download is currently going, the upload, how many people are connected to the router, IP addresses, MAC address, etc. In general, everything you need!

Router operation status

It is also worth noting that some Internet providers there is additional protection - binding to the MAC address number (Each router or network card has its own). In this case, you should copy the old MAC address .

Addition!

MAC address: what is it and where to find it. How to clone the MAC address of an old network card -

This can be done in the "Management" section. The MAC address, by the way, is indicated on the sticker with the equipment (i.e. look at the sticker on your old router). Or you can connect it again to the PC and view it in its web interface.

If we are talking about network card- then just open it command line and enter: ipconfig /all

What else can you configure...

There are a couple of interesting options in the wireless network settings:

  • the first one is a task signal level . If your signal is good enough throughout the apartment, you can turn it down to medium or low (the default is high);
  • second - there is an option according to the task work schedules router. It’s convenient, for example, to turn it off at night (or during the day when you’re not at home - and you wouldn’t really want children surfing the Internet unattended...).

Another handy feature is in the “Bandwidth Control” section. Here you can limit a user: for example, set the speed limit to 512 KB/s. It’s very convenient when someone clogs your entire channel with their downloads, and your pages load in 10-15 seconds.

Last but not least, there is a parental control function. She's not perfect, of course, but still. Not every budget router model has such a thing.

What do we end up with?

Total for some 700-800 rubles. we get a high-quality router that covers the entire apartment with stable high-speed communication (up to 300 Mbit/s). Compared to the same D-link budget models for this money, it’s like heaven and earth! The budget option from Tenda wins on all counts.

I would also like to note that the latest firmware versions are entirely in Russian, with high-quality translation. In fact, the setup took place in a couple of minutes and there was no need to tinker with anything (I remember with trembling how I had to reflash TRENDnet routers, because... factory firmware worked very poorly).

That's all. Additions are welcome.
