Hello friends! Today's article will be devoted to one of the most popular Internet browsers among users - Google Chrome. We'll take a quick look at what cache is, increase cache memory in Chrome, and create a desktop shortcut for the browser.

Browser cache - what is it?

As always, before practice, I will give you a few terms. After all, how can we increase something if we don’t know what it is?

A cache is an intermediate buffer that stores used information. When viewing websites, videos, listening to audio on the Internet, files downloaded by the web browser, for all of the above, are saved in special folder on the hard drive - this is the cache folder.

When you visit a site on the Internet for the first time, to display its content, the browser contacts the server and downloads from there necessary information, which ends up in the folder mentioned earlier. When you visit the same site a second time, the browser will take all the necessary files from the cache. Accordingly, this will load the page faster and use less traffic.

Its capacity in the browser is limited. So when it ends free space, old records are erased and new ones are recorded. If you notice that online games or videos are starting to slow down, you can try increasing your browser cache.

In order to free up space on your hard drive, or if you notice that errors have appeared in the browser, you can. Read the detailed article by following the link.

Increase Chrome cache

Find the Chrome shortcut on your desktop and right-click on it. Select from context menu"Properties" item.

In the properties window, go to the "Shortcut" tab. In the “Object” field, put italics at the end, press the spacebar and insert: —disk-cache-dir=”c:\chromeсache”, space again and: —disk-cache-size=1073741824. Click "Apply" and "OK".

In both cases, the word disk is preceded by two hyphens. The number 1073741824 is the volume in bytes. Set the desired value. In this case, 1073741824 bytes is 1 GB.

How to create a Chrome shortcut on your desktop

If following the instructions above, you did not find the required shortcut, let's look at how to make a Chrome shortcut on your desktop.

Open “Computer” and find the folder where Google Chrome is installed. More specifically, we need an executable file. If you did not select a different folder during installation, then most likely you need to go to the path: C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application.

Find here required file. To be sure, right-click on it and go to “Properties”. On the “General” tab, in the “File type” field, the extension should be .exe.

Browser caches are copies of web pages that the user has already viewed. When you try to view these pages again, the browser (or proxy server) will no longer request them from the web server, but will retrieve them from the cache. Using a cache reduces network load and increases page loading speed. To speed up loading, the game stores resources in the browser cache and takes them from there as needed. To prevent resources from being evicted from the cache over time, it maximum size needs to be increased.

Increasing the cache of Chromium-based browsers

The list of browsers based on the Chromium engine includes browsers such as Chrome, Opera latest versions, Yandex.Browser and others. WITH full list you can find it at the link. The cache size of Chromium-based browsers changes the same way.

Standard means do not provide for increasing the cache size, so we use alternative way- adding parameters separated by a space --disk-cache-dir="с:\browserсache" --disk-cache-size=1073741824 in the shortcut for the executable file.

  • C:\browserсache - cache folder, indicated in quotes, the path is chosen at your discretion;
  • 1073741824 - cache size in bytes, in this case it is 1 GB.

Instructions for increasing the cache using an example Google browser Chrome:
1) Find the shortcut with which you launch the browser (for example, Chrome), right-click on it and click “ Properties».
2) Go to the tab Label and in the field Object after ...chrome.exe" put a space and enter the line --disk-cache-dir="C:\ChromeCache" --disk-cache-size=1073741824

3) Agree with the changes made by clicking the “ OK».

Increasing Standalone Flash Player cache

See Increase Internet Explorer (IE) and Microsoft Edge cache as Standalone Flash Player uses Internet Explorer cache.

Most computer users have heard about the concept of a system cache, but not everyone clearly understands what it is and what it is needed for. And many, not fully understanding what role this component plays in the operating system, immediately try to perform actions with it related to resizing. How advisable it is to change the default parameters - we will consider further.

What is the cache for, and how is it advisable to increase it?

Let's start with the fact that there are several types of cache. The system cache, as is already clear, is used for the needs of Windows, and the program cache is intended for the correct functioning of applications. Most often, users encounter the concept of a cache when working with Internet browsers. But what is it and what is it for? A cache, regardless of type, is a kind of storage of temporary files, the use of which increases the speed of loading a program or opening the same pages on the Internet. That is, the user deals with a certain space reserved on the hard drive that is used by the operating system or a separate application.

We are not yet considering how to increase the system cache or program cache. First, let's decide whether it's worth doing this at all? On the one hand, there is nothing wrong with reserving more disk space for storing temporary files. Most ordinary users think so. But in reality, the cache can only be increased to a certain extent, since setting it too large will result in the system having to sort through too many objects to load before it finds the one it needs when performing some operation. Accordingly, the launch time of programs will be significantly reduced. In addition, you should pay attention that the cache is reserved on the hard drive, and the speed of accessing it can be significantly reduced, for example, when errors occur, file fragmentation, etc.

How to increase the system cache in Windows 7 or another system?

Now let's move on to changing the size of the reserved space. First, let's look at the Windows 7 system cache.

To automatically increase its size, you must use the computer properties menu and go to additional settings. In the “Advanced” tab, you need to check the option for optimizing the operation of background services and cache. It is believed that in this way it is possible to slightly reduce the load on RAM and speed up program launches.

Paging File Options

Sometimes, along with increasing the cache size, some experts recommend performing additional actions with the so-called paging file, which is responsible for the operation and use of virtual memory - the same reserved volume on the hard drive, but used for unloading software components in case of insufficient RAM.

As with the system cache, you need to be extremely careful. With a small amount of RAM, the paging file can actually be increased slightly by setting it to a value that is 1.5-2 times higher than the default value determined or recommended by the system. But even here it should be remembered that if you install too much volume, you can achieve the opposite effect, when programs will prioritize accessing virtual memory rather than RAM. We repeat: the access speed to the hard drive is lower than to the RAM strips. Because of this, we experience slowdowns in programs at startup or during operation.

It is unofficially believed that with settings set at 8 GB or more, the paging file can be disabled altogether, which will in no way affect the performance of the system in a negative way. On the contrary, sometimes performance improvements can be achieved.

System cache settings in the system registry

Virtual memory or cache parameters can also be changed in system registry. As for the standard automated increase in the Windows 10 system cache, it is better to do it in this editor (regedit). Here you need to use the HKLM branch and go through the SYSTEM section and current control parameters to the MemoryManagement folder.

Here we are interested in two parameters: DisablePagingExecutive and LargeSystemCache, which can be assigned values of either zero (disable) or one (enable). The first key actually duplicates disabling virtual memory, and the second increases the system cache (the system will use not the default 8 MB, but all memory, except for the last 4 MB).

Cache settings in web browsers

Browsers also have cache-related settings. Accordingly, the reserved volume can be changed. To do this, use the appropriate settings. True, depending on the developer of the browser itself, they may be located in completely different sections.

For example, in old version"Opera" options are set in the history settings. In a new browser modification, you should use the shortcut properties, and in the path to executable file in the object type field, add the combination —disk-cache-size=Volume and desired cache size in kilobytes (for example, for 1 GB it will be 1073741824 KB).

Clearing cache

Everything seems to be clear with changing the cache size. In conclusion, it remains to add that it is recommended to clear the cache, if not constantly, then at least periodically, since the accumulation of temporary files can significantly slow down the operation of both the system and programs. You can perform these actions in Windows using normal cleaning system disk, in browsers - by clearing your browsing history, cache and Cookies.

It is more convenient to use all kinds of optimizer programs, in which you simply need to use the appropriate system optimization and privacy cleaning modules in the section for checking and fixing problems in one click.

Every modern browser by default, it partially saves the information of web pages, which significantly reduces the waiting time and the amount of traffic consumed when opening them again. This stored information is nothing more than a cache. And today we will look at how you can increase the cache in the Google Chrome Internet browser.

Increasing the cache is necessary, of course, to store more information from websites on your hard drive. Unfortunately, unlike the browser Mozilla Firefox where cache expansion is available regular means, in Google Chrome a similar procedure is performed in slightly different ways, but if you have a compelling need to increase the cache of a given web browser, then this task is quite easy to cope with.

How to expand the cache in the Google Chrome browser?

Considering that Google company If you consider it necessary not to add a cache increase function to your browser menu, then we will take a slightly different tricky route. First, we need to create a browser shortcut. To do this, go to the folder with installed program(typically this location is C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application), click on the application "chrome" right-click and select the option in the pop-up menu "Create shortcut" .

Right-click on the shortcut and in the additional menu that pops up, select the option "Properties" .

In the pop-up window, double-check that you have a tab open "Label" . In the field "Object" The address leading to the application is posted. We need to enter two parameters to this address separated by a space:

Disk-cache-dir="c:\chromeсache"

Disk-cache-size=1073741824

As a result, the updated “Object” column in your case will look something like this:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --disk-cache-dir="c:\chromeсache" --disk-cache-size=1073741824

This command means that you increase the size of the application cache by 1073741824 bytes, which is equivalent to 1 GB. Save your changes and close this window.

Cache is a very important component of any program, be it Mozilla or opera, google chome. But before you figure out how to increase it, you need to understand what it is and why it is needed. A cache is a fast-acting buffer memory that occurs between the processor and the main memory of the computer.

The cache is needed in order to partially compensate for the loading speed of various web pages, especially those that you visit frequently or those that you have visited at least once before. The cache folder stores all pictures, video animations, etc. from pages on the Internet.

How to properly increase the cache in Mozilla Firefox

Each program has its own algorithm for increasing the cache. First, let's look at this process in one of the most popular among all Internet users (this fact was clarified thanks to several social surveys in popular social networks).

First of all, go to Mozilla, find the settings icon there and click on it.

After we call the window, a window will appear on the desktop in which there will be an “Advanced” tab, click on it and find the “Network” button, there should be an item with a checkmark “Disable automatic cache memory management”, the checkbox must be unchecked.

In this browser, the maximum memory capacity is only 2025 MB.

Now we set the required amount of memory, but also remember the maximum allowable value. After setting the volume, the computer automatically saves the changes. All you need to do is close.

How to increase volume in Opera

When zoomed in, there are slight differences in opera from mastic. But they are insignificant and can be quickly examined and disassembled.

So, first of all, we go into the program and its settings. In the settings we find the tab “ general settings" The settings window should open. There should be a button “Advanced”, click on it and find the “History” tab, and then click on “Disk Cache”. Now we set the required volume, but also remember the maximum value. In this browser it is 400MB.

It is also recommended to check the box next to “Clear cache after exit”. This means that after each closing of the Opera browser, all unnecessary cache will be deleted. This is necessary in order not to clog the operating system your computer or laptop.

How to increase the cache in Yandex, Google Chrome and Opera 21

In these browsers, the memory increase is very different from the previous two browsers. But first things first. In order to increase the cache, you do not need to go into the program settings, but do everything through the launch shortcut and add several new lines. Unfortunately, not all computer and Internet users will be able to immediately figure everything out and repeat this procedure. But it’s important to just know how it’s done.

Since the engines on which Yandex, Chrome and Opera 21 run are the same (called Chromium), then naturally all the settings are identical, and in the case of the cache, the actions will be similar.

In order to increase memory in Yandex, do this:

  • Right-click on the launcher shortcut and find the “properties” item there.
  • There we find the “shortcut” tab and see the empty “object” field, put a space there and write the following line: –disk-cache-dir=”с:\YandexCache” –disk-cache-size=1073741824.

This means that we just increased the amount of cached memory to 1GB. And the entire cache will be stored on the computer in the YandexCache folder on drive C

  • The last action is to confirm and save the settings.

The amount of cached memory in the Google Chrome browser also increases. The only thing that will change is the line that will need to be added to the “object” field: –disk-cache-dir=”с:\ChromeCache” –disk-cache-size=1073741824

Now click on the “apply” button (in some browsers, instead of “apply”, the “save” button appears). Now we have increased the memory to 1 GB.

All these procedures are quite simple and should not cause any problems, especially for users who use their computer as “YOU”.

Clearing cache as one of the ways to increase space

You can increase memory by cleaning already unnecessary files. After all, they take up a lot of space, thereby preventing the browser from functioning normally. Also, if you do not clear your cache from time to time, you may have problems loading some sites.

For example, if you once visited this web page, but since your last visit it has been updated, and your program through which you visit the Internet launches its saved copy. So, what is the correct way to clear your cache?

First, let's look at Mozilla Firefox:

The second most popular is Google Chrome, so it’s worth considering how to clear everything in it:

We open our program as standard. Next, we also find the “History” window, click on it and select “Clear recent history”. There you can select what exactly needs to be deleted, do not forget to check the box next to “Cache”, confirm your action and click on “Delete”.

Now you have more space on your hard drive to store new data from various sites. The main thing is not to forget to perform this procedure at least several times a month. Otherwise, the program may begin to freeze and display various web page content poorly.
