Often faced with printing PDF files on different devices, from printers to plotters, I decided to write an article in which I will tell you what problems can arise when printing non-standard formats. For example, do you know how to print an A1 drawing on a simple printer? Here! I will talk about such problems in this article.

Sometimes you need to print an A3 document on A4 or vice versa. Not everyone needs this, but most often it is engineering and technical workers who need to distort documents in this way.

A fragment of a document should be printed or a huge drawing in A2 format should be obtained on an A4 sheet. That's what I'll tell you about.

Task one. From big to small

In all our manipulations, you will need only one tool - Adobe Acrobat Reader version no lower than 10.

You can download the latest version if someone else doesn’t have it. Just uncheck the box, otherwise Adobe Acrobat Reader comes with McAfee, which also installs on its own. So, don't forget to uncheck the box.

Let's say we have a drawing or a large table in PDF format. This file can be created several times in different ways, which I have written about more than once and you can read here, but in our case, a virtual printer is best suited and I highly recommend PDF Creator.

As an example, I stole a piece of a drawing in A2 format from work.

The algorithm for creating from a large to a small format is as follows.

You send the source file for printing, but select a virtual printer as the printer and select the paper format in which the drawing was made. Under no circumstances should you make the format smaller; all the line thicknesses will float and your document will become unreadable. So, if you have a source document in A2 format, then you need to print on a virtual printer in A2.

Thus, we obtain a drawing in PDF format with all proportions, thicknesses and font sizes preserved. And then all that remains is to print the received file on a standard printer.

Foreshadowing the logical questions “Why be so perverted?” I'll explain. Here's the situation for you. You have created a Word document in A3 format. This is a beautiful poster, and if you start formatting it under A4, you will have to redo everything: from the size of the fonts to the size of the pictures. But if you make a PDF file from this poster in its original format, then in the future it will be possible to print it on paper of any size: from A0 to A5.

Task two. From small to big

While I was writing the article I had to use this method in practice.

If you have a plotter, then of course this method It will be of no use, but I often only have an A4 printer. Well, how can you print something large on it? Don't know? Now I'll tell you. Naturally, the resulting sheets will have to be glued together. Here everyone chooses for themselves: to glue the sheets of paper or to run around with their tongue hanging out in search of a plotter.

So, let's open required file in Adobe Reader and go to the File - Print menu.

And in this window we need the Poster button. You can, of course, use the Size button, but Poster is much simpler. Click on the Poster button...

And using the Scale Section we adjust our sheet to the required number of pages.

By the way, you can check the box for Cutting marks. Thus, you will receive special marks on the printed sheet, along which it is convenient to trim the sheets.

Using scissors and office glue (adhesive tape), a couple of A4 pages are turned into one A3 sheet. Well, or four sheets of A4 into one - A2, depending on what you want to get at the output.

It’s a perversion, of course, but sometimes you can’t live without it.

Task three. Print the fragment.

I thought I’d finish with two tasks, but I remembered how some of my low-blind employees asked me to print a piece of text or drawing in an enlarged format.

It's very easy to do

Open the required document (I show it in the same drawing)

And enlarge the fragment that needs to be printed. Just enlarge it as you see it on the monitor screen, and this is how it will look when printed.

Now go to the print menu and select the item Additional options– Current view.

Click the Print button and get an enlarged fragment of a piece of the document.

Task four. The PDF file does not print.

Sometimes you encounter such a thing that a PDF file does not print as it should. More precisely, it is printed, but on the printed sheet, instead of normal text, all sorts of gibberish appear.

I met someone like this, although it was a long time ago; I haven’t seen anything like this recently. Most often this is due to incorrect encoding, that is, printer drivers cannot correctly determine what language the text is written in and, accordingly, they print it on paper as best they can.

There is a way around this problem.

In the Print menu, click the Advanced button

And in the window that appears, check the box “Print as image”

All. The program “thinks” that the file contains not text, but a picture, and prints it like an ordinary image. The only thing in earlier Adobe versions Reader this function was called “Print as on the screen”
