iPad and the Environment

Apple takes a complete product life cycle approach to determining our environmental impact. Learn more

iPad embodies Apple's continuing environmental progress. It is designed with the following features to reduce environmental impact:

  • Mercury-free LCD display
  • Arsenic-free display glass
  • BFR-free
  • PVC-free
  • Recyclable aluminum and glass enclosure
  1. Actual size and weight vary by configuration and manufacturing process.
  2. 1GB = 1 billion bytes; actual formatted capacity less.
  3. 4G LTE is supported only on AT&T and Verizon networks in the U.S. and on Bell, Rogers, and Telus networks in Canada. See your carrier for details.
  4. Cellular data plan is sold separately. The model you purchase is configured to work with a particular cellular network technology. Check with your carrier for compatibility and cellular data plan availability.
  5. Testing conducted by Apple in February 2012 using preproduction iPad units and software. Testing consisted of full battery discharge while performing each of the following tasks: video playback, audio playback, and Internet browsing using Wi-Fi or cellular data network. Video content was a repeated 2-hour 23-minute movie purchased from the iTunes Store. Audio content was a playlist of 358 unique songs, consisting of a combination of songs imported from CDs using iTunes (128-Kbps AAC encoding) and songs purchased from the iTunes Store (256-Kbps AAC encoding). Internet over Wi-Fi and cellular data network tests were conducted using dedicated web and mail servers, browsing snapshot versions of 20 popular web pages, and receiving mail once an hour. All settings were default except: Wi-Fi was associated with a network (except for Internet browsing over cellular data network); the Wi-Fi feature Ask to Join Networks and Auto-Brightness were turned off. Battery life depends on device settings, usage, and many other factors. Battery tests are conducted using specific iPad units; actual results may vary.
  6. Wireless broadband recommended; fees may apply.

Today we will talk about the most interesting characteristic that can be found in the iPad - the size of its screen, the most impressive thing about these tablets.

Over the years, Apple has released a lot of gadgets and now it’s time to take stock. I'll tell you about the screen diagonal of each iPad.

What is the screen diagonal of the iPad?

Tablets are those devices where display size really matters. Let's look at what happened to Apple gadgets starting from the first iPad.

Screen size iPad, iPad 2,3,4

The very first iPad went on sale back in 2010. As soon as the first tablet appeared, it immediately became clear who would be the favorite in the coming years.

The design of these four models has remained almost unchanged and you won’t find in them the features that made the tablets stand out. Almost everyone wanted them.

  • iPad:
  • iPad 2: 9.7 inches, IPS LCD, resolution 1024×768, 132 ppi;
  • iPad 3:
  • iPad 4:

Regardless of the model, the picture quality has always been very chic. But technology does not stand still, and the long-awaited Retina appeared in the last two generations of this series.

iPad Air, iPad Air 2 screen size

The continuation was very interesting, because the body was radically changed and new colors appeared. The frames have been dramatically reduced, but the display size remains the same.

The more compact size of the devices made these iPads more attractive and modern. The new IGZO technology has taken screens to a new level.

  • iPad Air: 9.7 inches, Retina, resolution 2048×1536, 264 ppi;
  • iPad Air 2: 9.7 inches, Retina, resolution 2048×1536, 264 ppi.

Everything else remains the same, and the aforementioned technology has reduced response time and power consumption.

Screen diagonal iPad mini, iPad mini 2,3,4

It's time to talk about tablets that are very close to today's standards of top-end smartphones. Manufacturers have already paused a bit with screen sizes, and this is for the better.

The mini version of the iPad is very popular today and for many it is very convenient to carry such a little thing absolutely everywhere. Its capabilities are almost as good as other models.

  • iPad mini: 7.9 inches, IPS, resolution 1024×768, 163 ppi;
  • iPad mini 2:
  • iPad mini 3: 7.9 inches, Retina, resolution 2048×1536, 326 ppi;
  • iPad mini 4: 7.9 inches, Retina, resolution 2048×1536, 326 ppi.

Despite smaller sizes display, the quality is in no way inferior to larger models. The resolution is exactly the same, but the number of dots per inch is higher.

iPad Pro screen size

The last two models were simply excellent and one of them especially stood out. The size of one of the iPads is simply impressive.

Externally, the two representatives of the Pro series are very identical. Therefore, people here take it for its intended purpose, because a whole mini TV in their hands may not always be useful.

  • iPad Pro: 9.7 inches, Retina, resolution 2732×2048, 264 ppi;
  • iPad Pro: 12.9 inches, Retina, resolution 2732×2048, 264 ppi;.

So far, these two models have become the most impressive, both in terms of performance and picture quality. The new anti-reflective coating makes working in the sun even more comfortable.

Results

That’s basically all I wanted to tell you about the screen sizes of all iPads and their diagonals. Apple hasn't released anything new for a long time, it's interesting to see the next generations.

Although judging by the performance, probably in another year or two the pros will be able to cope with all the assigned tasks and more.

If you remember, we talked about the first two generations of the legendary tablet on the pages of our online magazine. Today we will show you technical specifications the latest iPad 3, whose presentation took place in March 2012.

So, what new awaits us? Firstly, the device has become somewhat thicker (about half a centimeter), it is heavier, and has much more powerful processor, a higher-resolution camera on the back (five megapixels), a reinforced battery, and a screen whose resolution is four times greater than its predecessor. As operating system iOS 5.1 is used. Interestingly, many parts for the tablet were created by Samsung, a direct competitor of Apple. Despite the confrontation, the companies continue fruitful cooperation with each other.

Documentation

This year before by Apple there was a special task. She needed to make something more advanced than the iPad 2, although due to its popularity and the sluggish development of Android tablets, it generally did not need updating. Therefore, the Cupertino team decided to focus on the main problem in their second “tablet”. And, let's be honest, the efforts were not in vain. The new iPad has become even more ideal, surpassing its closest competitors in all respects.

All the most great deals for iPads (there are even 10 thousand cheaper than the market). They change something and even give it away for free.

The box of the new iPad is no different from the packaging of last year's tablet. High-quality white cardboard, minimal amount of waste paper, cable, charger and two miniature apple stickers. The main difference from all other generations is the picture of the iPad itself, on the springboard of which a new blue “wallpaper” is installed.

Frightened by the reviews of the first iPad 3 buyers, I took it out of the box and began to twirl it in my hands. I tried to feel the increased weight and thickness, but, fortunately, I could not notice either one. Finding the Home power/lock button, I pressed it and saw it - new screen with a resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels!

Finally after iPhone screen 4/4S on the iPad display can be viewed with the same pleasure! Icons of standard applications and the entire operating interface iOS systems just comes to life before our eyes. I stared at the Facetime and icons for a long time, but I still couldn’t see any hint of a pixel. The text in the e-readers, already updated for the Retina screen of the new iPad, looks simply gorgeous, second only to traditional periodicals because they behave worse in direct sunlight.

No matter how hard I tried, I did not notice an increase in the speed of the system. I launched various applications, HD videos on Youtube, played GTA III and Real Racing 2 HD, but did not notice any features of the updated chip Apple A5X with 4-core GPU, which is used in the new iPad. We'll wait for specialized toys from the developers at Epic Games, and then we'll draw some conclusions.

iPad camerastopped being a disgrace acquired 5 megapixel sensor with a whole bunch of new functions (autofocus, tap focus, face recognition, video shooting in 1080p format with 30 frames per second). It’s not easy to imagine a person who will use a new tablet as their main photo tool, but I still decided to take some photos on the street. The picture quality has improved greatly, although the noise has not disappeared.

Information about the previous photo

After 15 minutes of testing the third-generation iPad camera, I finally realized that its absence on the back cover of the tablet would not upset me at all. It would be much more interesting to get an improved front camera for Facetime/Skype conversations. Existing VGA parody, unfortunately, spoils the entire impression of the high-resolution Retina screen.

As a result, all the innovations of the third iPad can be divided into two categories - those that will be useful for a Russian-speaking person living in this side of the ocean, and those that will only be a pleasant but useless addition. To the first point include a Retina display, an improved camera, quad-core graphics chip capabilities and Bluetooth version 4.0 in the future. To the second- support for LTE networks, voice dialing text a la Siri (naturally, without Russian language support) and increased battery capacity (lasts 9-10 hours). The new iPad has become better, faster and a little more functional than all previous generations and has already deserved to get rid of numbers and letters in its name and become a household name. iPad - best device in your class, and new iPad This is just further proof.

> Opinion of Artur Malosiev

A year ago, I did not buy an iPad 2, being satisfied with my first generation tablet. But now it’s time to upgrade, because the resources of the “first” are clearly not enough. In February, a battered, used iPad 2 fell into my hands, but with a intact display, and I enjoyed its company for a month. When the box with the iPad 3 arrived at my house, the first thing I did was test it...

Speed of opening games and websites

I tested the speeds of the iPad 2 and 3 on the games Mass Effect Infiltrator and Sky Gamblers. It's a fighting draw here. There are differences in terms of graphics, read about that below.

When working in Internet iPad 2 is slightly weaker than the new model, but the difference is so small that it can be ignored. For those who like numbers, I can give you the data from two tests that we measured yesterday with the entire editorial team.

(x1000)
– Air (i7) – 586
– iPad 3 – 100
– iPad 2 – 98
– iPhone 4S – 76
– Galaxy Note – 55
– iPhone 3GS – 38
– iPhone 2G – 8

Sunspider
– Air (i7) – 246
– iPad 3 – 1818
– iPad 2 – 1772
– iPhone 4S – 2150
Samsung Galaxy Note – 2925
– iPhone 4 – 3410
– iPhone 3GS – 5113

It was no coincidence that I got here, it was suggested by Roma Yuryev to show Android features OS. The numbers given in the test above were obtained on the “bare” laptop firmware. However, then Roma flashed his phone with a custom image of CheckROM NoteHD V5 and the Franko #7 kernel, as a result of which the speed of the Note increased by 1.8 times and it was ahead of the iPad 3 in tests. This is what manual customization of Android means.

Like Kostya Gribanov, I did not notice any difference in performance.

CAMERA

There is no point in comparing the quality of photos of the iPad 3 with the iPad 2, so I tested the camera of the “third” under the watchful eye of the iPhone 4S. Compared to the iPhone 4S, pictures taken on the iPad 3 are less saturated. The optics are the same, but the sensors are different. On iPad 3 it costs less.

I can hardly imagine people running down the street and taking pictures on an iPad, but due to the weight of the tablet, the pictures will be less blurry than on the same iPhone :) The iPad 3 sensor is comparable to the iPhone 4 - it processes information here and there Omnivision OV5650 with an operating temperature range from -30 to 70° C and an active cell size of 1.75 microns (versus 1.4 microns for the iPhone 4S).

Job stabilization systems leaves much to be desired. Probably because it is software, not optical. Where to find the trigger Off to turn it off completely?

The front camera remains unchanged.

DIMENSIONS

If you can tell by eye where the iPad 2 is and where the iPad 3 is, then you are Robin Hood.

Most people, even from half a meter away, will not be able to tell exactly what model of tablet you have in your hands. The width and height of the iPad 3 remained the same - 185.7 x 241.2 mm, but the thickness increased by only six tenths of a millimeter - from 8.8 to 9.4 mm.

In similar configurations, the iPad 3 is 50 grams heavier than the iPad 2 due to the battery.

BATTERY

The battery capacity of the iPad 3 has increased by almost 1.7 times (6930 → 11560 mAh), as the graphics chip and monstrous display require more resources. And as a result, the tablet charges very slowly: only 20% per hour in idle mode.

It is curious that in a car with the navigator running and GPS activated charging iPad 3 from the cigarette lighter can last for several days.

DISPLAY

OOOOOOO! YOU CAN FALL IN LOVE WITH THE NEW IPAD WITHOUT MEMORY JUST FOR THE DISPLAY!

When you move your gaze from iPad 2 to iPad 3, déjà vu arises, as in the case of comparing the quality of the screens on the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. Once you fix your gaze on the iPad 3, you will no longer want to look at anything else.

Was: 1024 x 768 pixels
It became: 2048 x 1536 pixels

That is, the pixel density has increased 4 (four!) times with the same diagonal of 9.7 inches. Because of this, pixels are not felt at all on the iPad 3 screen. Let's compare?
