– Basic improvements to the common language runtime (CLR), including: improved image layout in native .NET Framework codes; avoiding strict name checking for fully trusted assemblies; improved performance when launching applications; Improved code generation that reduces the execution time of completed applications; and the ability to execute managed code in ASLR mode (injecting randomness into the address space structure), if supported by the operating system. – WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) performance improvements, including reduced startup time and improved performance for bitmap effects. Additional WPF features include improved support for business applications, support for native splash screens, support for texture builders, and a new WebBrowser control.

– ClickOnce application publishers can opt out of application signing and hashing if this option better suits their scenarios. Developers can programmatically install ClickOnce applications that display custom information about trademark. ClickOnce error dialogs support links to application-specific support sites on the Internet.

– Entity Framework - development of the existing set of ADO.NET data access technologies. Entity Framework allows developers to program relational database operations according to application-specific domain models rather than underlying database models. Entity Framework introduces some additional features, including support for new SQL types Server 2008, default Entity graph serialization and entity data source. This version of Entity Framework supports the new SQL Server 2008 streaming capabilities for dates and files. Working with graph serialization makes it easier for developers to build Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) services that use the modeling of complete graphs as data contracts. The Entity Data Source allows web application creators who want to work with the Entity Framework to use traditional data source techniques for ASP.NET.

– LINQ to SQL supports new SQL Server 2008 streaming capabilities for dates and files.

– The ADO.NET Data Services Framework consists of a combination of templates and libraries that allow you to expose data as a flexible, REST-based data service that can be ingested by web clients in corporate networks or on the Internet. The ADO.NET Data Services Platform allows you to create data services from any data source. The conceptual model of viewing the underlying storage schema can be easily made accessible through rich integration with the ADO.NET Entity Framework. Services built using the ADO.NET Data Services Platform, as well as compatible Windows Live services (dev.live.com), are easily accessible from any platform. A set of client libraries is available for client applications running on Microsoft platforms to simplify interaction with data services. For example, clients based on the .NET Framework can use LINQ to query data services and a simple .NET Framework object layer to update data in the service.

– Windows Communication Foundation now makes the DataContract serializer easier to use with improved interoperability support. It improves debugging performance in partial trust scenarios and expands support for the RSS protocol, allowing it to be more widely used in Web applications 2.0.

– The .NET Framework Data Provider for SQL Server (SqlClient) adds support for the ability to use file streams and sparse columns in SQL Server 2008.
