Famous people

Throughout the existence of Scalea, many famous poets, musicians and politicians have visited here. But I didn’t find them, so I would like to talk about one very famous Russian actor who purchased property in Scalea. This is Boris Vladimirovich Klyuev, known to everyone from the films “D’Artagnan and the Three Musketeers”, “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson”, “Voronin” and many, many others.

Prices in Scalea

Shopping in Scalea

There are quite a lot of shops in Scalea, both large and small. You may have a question " Where to buy groceries in Scalea?. The main places to buy groceries are the supermarkets “Spar”, “MD”, “Aldel”, “Conad”, “EuroSpin”. They are all pretty good, so everyone chooses what they like. For example, I like the first one.

But I prefer to buy meat and fish in specialized stores (fish - pesceria, meat - macelleria), since in supermarkets I have had to deal with low-quality products (precisely these).

And I would also like to add that in the summer it is very inconvenient to make purchases in large supermarkets due to long queues and crowds; during this period, local residents switch more to small shops.

If you have already been to Italy, you know that Italian bread is incredibly tasty, and especially Neapolitan bread. the seller of this bread, in my opinion the best in Scalea, is located not far from Parco Flor a on Via del Mulino. It looks very inconspicuous and few visitors know about it, unlike local residents. Here, a stone's throw away, there is a store selling Romanian products, which since November 2016 also sells Russian food- sour cream, buckwheat porridge, fermented baked milk, herring, condensed milk and something else, for now they are just getting acquainted with our products, but in the future the range may expand.

Every Monday you can visit vegetable market, which is located near the symbol of the city Torre Talao, as well as a clothing market - where you can find clothes, shoes, household chemicals, and various items useful in everyday life (it is located near the DeSpar supermarket). The market is only open in the morning.

Main part souvenir shops located along the road Corso Mediteraneo.

Sales shops precious metals They are mainly located in the Center of Scalea near the historic center in Piazza Caloprese. Here you can find the best coffee shops in Scalea and drink a cup of real coffee, as well as try delicious Italian ice cream. But you should remember one nuance: in some cafes it is not allowed (in summer) to eat ice cream at tables, the reason for this strangeness can only be guessed at.

Here in the center there are two, pharmacies cities. There is also a pharmacy on Via Lauro not far from DeSpar, but there medicines are mainly delivered to order during the day (i.e. there are few in stock).

There should also be no problems with buying clothes, both branded and Chinese; there are plenty of shops in Scalea. A huge number of them are located on Via Fiumo, Via Lauro, and in the same Piazza Caloprese.

Nice OVS store on Via Borsellino is a chain of Italian stores that are not very expensive due to the fact that the items are sewn in China. There is a Bata shoe store nearby.

Branded sportswear, shoes, underwear and much more can be purchased with a 50-70% discount at Giemme, which is far from the center of other stores with such an assortment of sneakers, tracksuits, jackets, etc. no, you can find it like this: from the center along the street Fiume Lao, near the DeSpar supermarket turn onto the street Via Lauro and straight away without turning anywhere (don’t miss 100%).

Many people are not very happy with Scalea in terms of shopping; in this case, it is better to go to the regional center, the city of Cosenza, or even better, to Naples, or.

Seasonal discounts in Scalea, and throughout Italy, begin in winter from January 6 to mid-February, in summer from July to mid-August.

All shops in Scalea must close for siesta from about 13.00 to 16.00; on Sunday, as a rule, all are closed, and if they are open, then until lunch.

Update 2018: due to the opening of new supermarkets in Scalea, and increased competition, many grocery supermarkets (and not only) are open without a lunch break (orario continuato).

Sea and beaches in Scalea

The summer of 2015, namely July in Scalea, was very hot, even Italians who were accustomed to the heat complained.

October and November 2016 in Scalea turned out to be very hot, I recommend looking at the photo.

One of the reasons why Scalea has gained popularity as a picturesque resort in Calabria is the sea. The water here is truly clean. Beaches in Scalea, to my regret, they are pebbly, but very clean, and this is the main plus.

In summer they open all along the coast. paid beaches, offering a lot of amenities:

  • umbrellas;
  • sun loungers;
  • toilet;
  • animators;
  • playgrounds;
  • bars;
  • restaurants.

And all this variety will cost from 5 - 20 euros per day, depending on the month, for more savings You can purchase a subscription for a week or a month. But if you're not willing to pay for convenience, Scalea also has free beaches.

The peak of the influx of tourists in Scalea, as well as in other resort towns in Italy, is August.

Mostly Neapolitans who come here on vacation are not distinguished by their cultural manners, so the locals, to put it mildly, do not like them. Visitors consider Scalea a breath of fresh air after a whole year of continuous work, but for locals this month turns into a terrible horror.

That's why the best months To visit Scalea, I consider April, May, June, July and September. Firstly, the water is clean, not like in August, and secondly, Italian children will not run and jump on their heads.

There are also large hotels along the coast, and if you rent a room from them, a visit to the beach is included in the price.

Water temperature in summer the temperature is from 20 to 28 °C, and if the beginning of autumn is not very rainy, you can swim in October.

Free beaches

Free beaches There are some on the coast, and there are quite a lot of them. Below you can see free seats for relax. The part of the coast in the photo is considered central; in summer, the local beaches are always filled with vacationers, and therefore the concentration of paid beaches here is greater.

In the first photo is the coastline from Torre Talao to the cliffs, here you will find 4 free beaches.

In the second photo is the area from the Santa Caterina Hotel to the Parco dei Principe Hotel, here I also noted several free beaches.

On the rest of the coast, which begins approximately after the Parco dei Principe hotel, there are fewer paid beaches, so there are more places for free recreation; finding them will not be difficult.

Weather in Scalea in winter

The weather here during the winter months is mostly windy and rainy. But we managed to find a photo from 2005 showing snow in Scalea...

Culinary traditions of Scalea

I can’t say anything specific about Scalea’s cuisine, but of course in restaurants the main emphasis is on Calabrian cuisine. In which vegetables, olives, seafood, and other cheeses are widely used.

Well, if you do visit Scalea, I advise you to go to the restaurant “La Vecchia Fattoria”, it is located at Fiume Lao, 150, not far from the MD supermarket (you go from the center and pass by MD and about another 200 - 300 meters) - his appearance not very noticeable, but it is very popular among rocks. Especially tasty They serve seafood and pizza here; we really liked the seafood appetizer (l’insalata di mare).

In the summer (in August), Scalea restaurants are really full, so the chefs, in a hurry, don’t really pay attention to the quality of the food they prepare and the service. But this is not the only good restaurant in Scalea, so if you have time and money, you can find exactly the restaurant or pizzeria and the chef that suits you.

We found another simply very, very good pizzeria on Viale Michelangelo, it is called “Il Peperoncino da asporto” (next to it is “Parafarmacia”), the cost of pizza here starts from 3.00 € (Margherita). The only peculiarity is that you cannot eat pizza there, only to take away. They are open from 19:00, if you speak Italian, you can place an order by calling +39 320 066 44 46.

All restaurants in Scalea, at lunch they offer menu fisso (what is available) - from 10.00 euros. And believe me, you are unlikely to eat it all. Dinner in a restaurant will cost from 25.00 euros.

Holidays in Scalea

(Madonna del Lauro) is considered one of the most important in the life of Scalea, since this particular saint is the patroness of the city. And it is in her honor that a grand celebration with fireworks, songs and dances takes place on September 7 and 8.

Scalea (incorrectly Scalia) is a city in Italy, located in Calabria, one of the most popular resorts visited by tourists from all over the world. The reason for this is not only the numerous attractions, but also the picturesque landscapes, because on one side the city is washed by the Tyrrhenian Sea, and on the other there are mountains. In summer, here you can not only swim in the warm sea, but also ski on the mountain slopes.

general information

Arriving from Scalea, tourists find themselves in its lower part. If you look at the city of Scalea (Italy) on the map, you can see that it consists of two parts. Below is the Lower Scalea, where all the tourist infrastructure is located, and the Upper Scalea is the historical center of the city. Many streets form stairs leading up to the top of the mountain.

Note! The very name of the city, Scalea, is translated from Italian as “stairs”. This is entirely due to its location.

Scalea is a city in Italy

Located away from the main highways of the country, the town has become a favorite place for family vacations among tourists from all over Europe and the Italians themselves. Increasingly, Russian citizens also go here on vacation.

A little about the city

A small town with a population of 10,000 people became a resort not so long ago, but at the same time, it has a fairly ancient history. In the historical center there are buildings from the 11th century on top of the cliff. Smart planning made it possible to preserve the landmarks and harmoniously connect them with modern buildings.

Note! Many tourists prefer not to stay in a hotel, but to rent an apartment for a month. However, this option is not always suitable.

Streets of Scalea

Scalea (Calabria, Italy) is a modern tourist center with many hotels, restaurants and villas. The city authorities are very competent in organizing recreation, and, despite the fact that in the high season the population can increase to 100,000 people, it does not feel crowded here.

Since 2007, Scalea has attracted the attention of many Russians. Some chose this place to spend their holidays, while others chose this place to buy real estate.

Climatic conditions

The weather on Scalea is characterized by a moderately warm climate. In the winter months there is significantly more rainfall here than in the warm season, but, in general, it rains quite rarely here. According to the classification of Köppen and Geiger, the climate can be classified as class Csa. The average annual temperature is +17 degrees.

Note! The first month of autumn is the beginning of the velvet season at the resort. The heat is receding, and there are significantly fewer tourists.

The city, surrounded by rocks, is protected from cold winds, which results in a mild climate. Even in winter, the temperature here does not drop below +7 degrees. Thus, you can come here for the winter holidays. However, it never gets cold here. Local residents say that they have 9 months of summer and 3 months of winter. This statement is partly true, because even in November the thermometers here show more than +20 degrees.

  • The history of the city is closely connected with the activities of Charles V, who decided to build a defense system here, in the construction of which all the townspeople took part in one way or another. Today the Talao Tower reminds of those times.
  • Despite the fact that the Princes' Palace is now a library, it is worth a visit. The 13th century building amazes with its beauty and grace.

Church of St. Mary of the Bishops

Also among other attractions it is worth highlighting the Church of St. Nicholas. It is located right next to the water in the lower part of the city. Here you can see paintings and sculptures preserved from ancient times.

Leisure organization

In addition to sightseeing and natural beauty, there are many other opportunities to spend your time interestingly.

Most tourists come here precisely because of the beaches. There is a lot of it here; in total, the beach coastline stretches for 3 kilometers. All of them have good infrastructure, and most of them have a Blue Flag water quality. Tourists can choose from paid beaches with umbrellas, showers, toilets, sun loungers and other amenities. Free beaches also have the minimum necessary, but there are always a lot of people here.

The town cannot compete with established fashion centers such as Milan and Paris, but almost all the leading Italian brands can be found here, so there will be something to see. You can also go to the market, where there are high-quality, but not expensive Italian things.

Useful information for tourists

Scalea is interesting not only for excursions. Historical places are not of interest to everyone, so amusement parks have been built in the city that will attract tourists. Here, vacationers will be able to see the city’s landscapes thanks to a Ferris wheel, ride on a racing track or shoot at a shooting range. Multi-storey labyrinths and roller coasters are no less interesting.

Already in the first week of the beginning of the tourist season, the city’s embankment is transformed. Numerous tents open here where you can buy souvenirs and real Calabrian spices.

Despite the fact that people mainly come here for a relaxing holiday and walks along the embankment, nightlife lovers will enjoy the local nightclubs.

Note! For older holidaymakers, dance evenings accompanied by accordion playing are held in the Old Town.

An equally varied program awaits sports fans. Various tournaments are held here in beach volleyball, jet ski racing and karting.

Having visited the resort during the rainy season, you don’t have to worry about ruining your vacation, because various musical groups and a circus will be on tour here, and a trip to the theater will be no less interesting. Regardless of the season, a holiday in Scalea will be remembered as a pleasant experience for a long time.

Scalea (Italian for “stairs”, 109 km from Cosenza) is located on the top of a cliff. The city consists of two parts - Lower Scalea (the resort itself) and Upper Scalea (the historical center of the city). Many of the town's streets are essentially stairs leading to the top.

Scalea is located far from the main Italian highway A1, so for most of the year it is a quiet, deserted and cozy town, but in August it’s as if all of Italy comes here: Scalea is one of the favorite places for family holidays among Italians. However, “all of Italy” is not the right word, rather all of Europe.

More and more Russians are buying real estate in Scalea - for permanent residence and summer holidays, so for those who want to forget about their compatriots during their vacation, this is not the best place.

How to get there

Scalea is 130 kilometers from the nearest airport - Lamezia Terme. To fly there from Russia you need to make a transfer in some European city, so many people choose direct flights to a major Italian city (Rome, Naples) and ground transport directly to Scalea. The city itself can be reached by train - it is connected by railways to all major Italian cities, or by rented car - 4.5 hours from Rome, 3 hours from Naples. Beaches

Scalea has more than 3 km of beaches with a variety of surfaces: large pebbles, small pebbles, coarse and fine sand. Almost all of them are marked with the UNESCO blue flag for water quality. In the high season, half of the beaches are paid, there is better infrastructure: there are umbrellas, sun loungers, showers, toilets and other amenities. There are also plenty of free beaches, but they are less well equipped and are always crowded. However, most tourists still prefer free beaches.

Shopping and souvenirs from Scalea

Of course, Scalea is not a fashion center like Milan, but it is still Italy. Scala presents almost all the “big” Italian brands that are of interest to any shopaholic or simply a lover of quality things. For those who are aiming to purchase things of the best quality at the lowest price, there are Italian outlets. The nearest one is in Praia a Maar (about 5 km from Scalea) and offers brands such as Missoni, Valentino and MCS at factory prices.

Those who are interested in souvenirs and inexpensive products should know that on Mondays the vegetable and clothing markets open their stalls.

Popular hotels in Scalea

From Calabria, as well as from Italy in general, unrefined olive oil and red wine are brought. Italians also believe that Calabria has the most delicious watermelons and lemons on the entire peninsula. Popular “memento items” include dolls in traditional costumes and shawls, ceramics, baskets, wood products, lace and embroidery, jewelry, and smoking pipes.

Entertainment and attractions in Scalea

In the old part of the city (Upper Scalea, 25 m above sea level) it is worth visiting the church of Santa Maria d'Episcopio and the small church of Spedale (Chiesa Dello Spedale). The church of San Nicola in Plateis is also noteworthy. Of the “worldly” buildings, the Spinelli Palace, prison towers and the Norman castle are interesting.

Perhaps the most famous monument of the lower part of the city (and also its symbol) is the Talao Tower (Torre Talao), which was once part of a chain of defensive structures against Saracen pirates erected along the entire Tyrrhenian coast. The part of the coast on which the bastion rises is called the island of Scalea (Isola di Scalea), because once this place was really an island, but over time the sea receded. In the rock under the tower there is a small ancient cave, where archaeologists discovered the remains of prehistoric people.

Neighborhood

From Scalea you can take several interesting excursions. For example, 14 km from the city is the picturesque village of Santa Domenica Talao ("on the Lao River"). This river, which flows near Scalea and this city, is famous for the fact that at its mouth scientists have discovered a unique archaeological value - traces of an unknown ancient culture. The findings suggest that a mysterious and little-studied civilization formed here in prehistoric times.

13 km from Santa Domenica Talao, the town of Papasidero is hidden in the mountains. Next to it is the Romito Cave (Grotta del Romito), where rock art dating back to the Early Paleolithic period was discovered.

In addition to entertainment in the form of excursions to historical places, Scalea offers its residents and guests many others. During the summer season, traveling circuses tour the city, two or three amusement parks open with the inevitable Ferris wheel, racing tracks, shooting ranges, three-story labyrinths and roller coasters. During the summer season, a huge number of tents with Calabrian souvenirs and spices are set up on the embankments. Tourists of any age and musical preference will find an establishment to their liking: from nightclubs for young people to accordion dance evenings in the Old Town for the older generation.
Fans of active recreation can take part in volleyball, karting or jet ski tournaments.

Technology lovers will be delighted by the annual MotoRaduno - here you can admire both modern SUVs and vintage cars. At the same time, a specialized motorcycle tuning festival is held.
